Miami Dolphins vs. Tennessee Titans Predictions

If this game can be half as exciting as the Music City Bowl played in this same venue on Thursday, we're going to be in for a treat. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill gets a crack at his former team in a game with plenty of AFC playoff implications.

Tennessee is one game back of the Kansas City Chiefs for the No. 1 seed, the only bye and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Titans gutted out a 20-17 victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16 last Thursday, and have had a couple of valuable extra days to rest the bumps and bruises. Tennessee is a game back looking for that bye, and remember, it has a 27-3 win in its pocket against the Chiefs back in Week 7 for the tiebreaker.

The Miami Dolphins are the first team in NFL history to lose seven consecutive games and win seven straight games in the same season. If Miami can beat Tennessee this week, and New England at Hard Rock Stadium next Sunday, the Dolphins would qualify for the AFC playoffs in rather miraculous fashion. Tannehill, the former first-round pick (No. 8 overall) by the Dolphins in 2012, would love nothing more than to dash the playoff dreams of his former organization while advancing his current team.

Miami Dolphins Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 8-7
  • ATS: 8-6-1
  • O/U: 6-9
  • ATS - Away: 4-2-1

The Dolphins have picked up seven straight wins, but more importantly to bettors, Miami is also 6-1 ATS during the win streak. Defense has played a huge part of the success, allowing a total of 82 points, or just 11.7 PPG. As you would expect, the UNDER has been the rule with that kind of defense, going 5-2 in the win streak, and 6-2 across the past eight games overall.

Miami seems to relish the role of underdog, too, going 20-8-1 ATS in the past 29 games as an underdog, while going 5-2-1 ATS in the past eight games against winning teams, too. The Dolphins are 5-1-1 ATS in the previous seven as a road 'dog, while going 3-1-1 ATS in the previous five contest against AFC foes. However, we're into January, and things haven't gone well for the Dolphins when flipping the calendar from December to January, going just 2-6 ATS in the past eight games in the first month of the new year.

As far as the total is concerned, the UNDER has also cashed in each of the previous four games on the road, while going 5-1 in the past six games against AFC teams. On the flip side, the OVER is 5-2 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record.

Tennessee Titans Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 10-5
  • ATS: 9-6
  • O/U: 7-8
  • ATS - Home: 5-3

While it doesn't appear RB Derrick Henry (foot) is going to be able to return from the reserve/Injured list for this one, the good news is that WR A.J. Brown appears to have put his injury in the rear-view mirror and he is looking like a top-notch receiver again. He dropped 145 receiving yards and a touchdown on the 49ers last week, his first game back after missing more than a calendar month due to injury. It was also his best production since he went for 155 yards and a score in Indianapolis on Halloween. A healthy Brown will help Tannehill immensely, as he really struggled in games when Brown was out and WR Julio Jones was also sidelined or not quite at 100 percent.

The Titans have connected in five of the past seven games at home. For totals, the UNDER is 4-1 in the past five games for the Titans, while hitting the UNDER in four of the past five at Nissan Stadium, too. The OVER is 12-4-1 in the past 17 games against a team with a winning overall record, for which the Fins do actually qualify.

The last time these teams met on Sept. 9, 2018, the Dolphins picked up a 27-20 win at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Oddly enough, Tannehill was under center for the home side. Miami has won three of the past four, while going 5-2 ATS in the previous seven meetings, and the OVER is 3-1 in the previous four head-to-head matchups. But most of those numbers are meaningless since the guy who was QBing the Fish is now on the other side.

The UNDER has connected in six of the past eight games overall for the Miami Dolphins. (AP)

Miami Dolphins vs. Tennessee Titans Betting Conclusion

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has done a tremendous job keeping his team focused after a 1-7 SU start, getting them not only back into the playoff picture, but keeping them on the second-longest active win streak in the NFL. However, you can't feel like the Dolphins have been getting a little bit lucky during the streak. Last week they won in New Orleans, but faced third-string rookie QB Ian Book. Prior to that they knocked off the lowly New York Jets and New York Giants in South Florida. They also rolled against a rudderless ship known as the Carolina Panthers. Before that, another win against the Jets. Really, the only win against a quality opponent came on a Thursday at home against the Baltimore Ravens. Other than that, the Dolphins have won, yes, but all against losing teams. Wins are wins, but we'll find out a lot about them this week.

When the Titans traded for Jones, many automatically tabbed this team as the team to beat in the AFC, thinking the offense would be prolific. And, at times, it has been. But Tennessee has really missed Henry. And Jones has his chronic hamstring issues which always keep him sidelined at least a handful of games. And Brown has missed time. They're finally, slowly, getting the band back together, and Brown being healthy again is the best news of all. Tannehill really struggled when his top receivers were Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Chester Rogers, as you might expect. The Titans are getting healthier in the nick of time, and I think they bounce the Dolphins, who really made a valiant run. Miami isn't going to go quietly, though.
