Panthers vs. Bears Prediction, Picks & Betting Odds for Thursday Night Football Week 10

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

Well, here it is: the primetime matchup that NFL fans across the globe have been desperately wanting to see, as the 1-7 Panthers take on the 2-7 Bears on Thursday Night Football this week. Mostly kidding. But all jokes aside, I’d much rather tune into an ugly matchup between two total disasters as opposed to some of the surefire blowouts that we’ve previously witnessed in stand alone games. At the very least, this contest should be competitive and filled with unpredictable blunders.

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook closed the lookahead line for this contest at Chicago -1.5, and then reopened at -2.5 on Sunday night, despite Bears QB Justin Fields missing the last three and a half weeks with a thumb injury and his status remaining unclear as of Wednesday afternoon. Chicago GM Ryan Poles has expressed optimism about a possible return for Fields over the last few days, and Fields returned to practice in a limited capacity this week. So, the spread for this contest has slowly crept into the neighborhood of Bears -3 or -3.5 at most shops. Although, Fields is officially listed as doubtful.

Regardless of Chicago’s QB situation though, the Bears are laying too many points in this spot, in my opinion. The Bears have scored 17 points or less in three of four games that required the service of backup QB Tyson Bagent. And news flash: even if Fields returns, he’s one of the worst passing QBs in the NFL, currently ranked 29th amongst qualifying signal callers in passing success rate and 21st in net yards per pass attempt. So, forgive me for being a little bit trepidatious about laying four points with a Chicago team that’s scored 20 points or less in six of nine games this season, whose subpar QB has missed the last three weeks with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand.

That said, I certainly won’t be backing Carolina in this spot either. I simply can’t bring myself to bet on this offense to pull its weight in the scoring department. The Panthers have scored 21 points or less in six of eight contests this season, as they enter the week ranked 26th in scoring at 17.5 points per game. They rank 28th in total yardage and 31st in yard per play. They rank dead-last in yards gained per pass attempt. Shall I continue?

On the flip side though, Carolina’s defense has stepped up recently, which has helped keep things competitive against some struggling squads in the last few weeks. The Panthers have held the opposing offense under 20 points and 270 total yards in three of their last five games. However, their solid defense continues to be negated by a turnover differential of -4 and miserable offensive play in general. Twenty points by either side should be enough to win this contest. Give me the under between two of the worst squads in the NFL on Thursday Night Football.

Carolina Panthers Betting Analysis

The Panthers drafted QB Bryce Young with the first overall pick in the latest NFL draft, and immediately inserted him into an offensive unit completely devoid of weaponry, and in most cases, the line simply can’t block for him.

There’s no getting around it: this Panthers team is truly awful. But for the time being, we should probably pump the brakes on our criticism of Carolina’s rookie QB. He’s been placed in an impossible situation, and all things considered, I don’t think any of the rookie QBs from the latest draft class would look good in this broken Carolina offense. Just give it some time. Young will be fine.

Chicago Panthers Betting Analysis

At this point, the Bears are playing for the future, already sitting at a record of 2-7, which puts them in position for the 3rd pick in the 2024 draft. However, to a certain extent, Chicago’s future is at stake in this matchup. Let’s take a trip back to the latest NFL draft, which saw the Panthers select Bryce Young with the first overall pick – a pick that originally belonged to a Bears team that finished with the worst record in the league at 3-14.

In order to acquire the Bears’ No. 1 overall selection, the Panthers sent DJ Moore to Chicago along with their first pick in the upcoming draft, which is currently positioned 2nd in next year’s draft order and sitting just half-a-game away from the top spot as we cross the halfway point of the season.

All that just to say, Chicago isn’t going to try to win many games the rest of the way. The tankathon has already begun for a Bears team that enters the week slated for two of the top three picks in next year’s draft. However, on this rare occasion, the Bears can briefly set aside their goals for the future and put the pedal to the metal against the previous owner of their additional first-round draft pick – which is another factor that seems to be swaying the opinions of spread bettors in this game. I hate to be the bearer of bad news though, the current iteration of this Chicago team is pretty bad even when they try to put their best foot forward.
