Belgium vs. Portugal Picks & Predictions

The signs from the tournament so far are that Belgium are a better team than Portugal. They won their group without Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard being fully fit and there is lots to like about Roberto Martinez’s side. Romelu Lukaku has looked excellent in every game, scoring three times, while the wing-back duo of Thomas Meunier and Thorgan Hazard have been hugely threatening down the flanks.

Hazard and De Bruyne are gradually growing into the tournament and could be crucial in the knockouts. The one worry is the lack of pace in defence. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are not the players they once were, and they could be vulnerable given how high up the pitch Belgium play.

At 15/4 it is hard to look past Lukaku for a first goal scorer. He is a lethal finisher who rarely goes missing from games. He also takes Belgium’s penalties.

Score Prediction: Belgium 2 Portugal 1

Betting Odds - Belgium vs. Portugal

Belgium were one of three teams to win all three of their group matches. They are rated as narrow 29/20 favorites with Portugal, who finished third in the group of death, at 2/1. The draw is quite short at 9/4. Belgium are 3/4 to qualify; Portugal are 1/1. Over 2.5 goals is rated at 11/10, with under 2.5 8/11.

Belgium Betting Outlook

Belgium should be shorter than 29/20 and I'm very happy to take them to win the match in 90 minutes. Lukaku has probably looked the best striker at the tournament so far. The team is experienced and has played together for seven or eight years without much disruption. Portugal look tactically vulnerable and are likely to exit the tournament.

Portugal Betting Outlook

Portugal were heavily backed before the tournament due to the excellent club form of several of their players, but they have not really convinced yet. They had to wait until the 85th minute to take the lead against Hungary, eventually winning 3-0. Next up they put in a dreadful tactical display against Germany.

Germany’s wing-backs, especially Robin Gosens on the left, were afforded ludicrous freedom to attack. Belgium play a similar system and Portugal will need to improve. Cristiano Ronaldohas bailed them out with his goals, scoring five, although three of those were penalties.
