The San Francisco 49ers will square off with the host Denver Broncos for a Week 3 Sunday Night Football matchup. Kickoff is slated for 8:20 p.m. ET from Empower Field at Mile High.

The 49ers beat the visiting Seahawks 27-7 but lost starting quarterback Trey Lance for the season due to a broken right ankle. Former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went 13-for-21 with 154 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions in relief of Lance. Garoppolo also rushed for a touchdown in the victory. Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel each caught five passes for the 49ers. 49ers running back Jeff Wilson Jr. rushed for 84 yards on 18 carries.

Nick Bosa tallied two sacks while Tashaun Gipson Sr. and Charvarius Ward each had an interception. The 49ers’ defense held the Seahawks to 216 total yards and only allowed one trip into the red zone, which was unsuccessful. The 49ers only committed one penalty, in comparison to  10 for the Seahawks. 

49ers tight end George Kittle will make his season debut against the Broncos after being out with a groin injury.  

The Broncos edged the Texans 16-9 in their home opener in Week 2. The Texans’ defense forced Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson (14-for-31, 219 yards, one touchdown, one interception) into a middling performance. The Broncos gained 149 yards on the ground, with Javonte Williams going for 75 yards. Defensive end Dre’Mont Jones collected six tackles and two sacks for the Broncos. Broncos kicker Brandon McManus converted all three of his attempts, including a long of 50 yards. 

The 49ers’ offense ranks fourth in rushing yards (182.5), tied for 19th in points per game (18.5), and 29th in passing yards (169.5). Lance was averaging 6.3 yards per completion with a quarterback rating of 55.0. On the ground, Lance rushed for 67 yards on 16 carries with seven first downs. Samuel has rushed for 105 yards on 12 carries with a long of 51 and four first downs. Aiyuk has seven catches for 103 yards and four first downs. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings has caught five receptions for 66 yards and two first downs. 

Defensively, the 49ers have allowed 13.0 points per game. Safety Talanoa Hufanga leads the 49ers with 17 tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass deflections, and an interception. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw has 13 tackles and two tackles for loss. Bosa has nine tackles and three sacks. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has recorded six tackles. Defensive end Samson Ebukam has a 10-yard sack. 

The Broncos’ offense ranks eighth in passing yards (265.5), ninth in rushing yards (126.0), and 24th in points per game (16.0). Wilson has a quarterback rating of 86.5 and has been sacked five times. Cortland Sutton leads the Broncos with 11 receptions for 194 yards, and nine first downs.

 Running back Williams has rushed for 118 yards and six first downs while catching 12 passes for 75 yards and four first downs. Running back Melvin Gordon has collected 105 yards and three first downs while having a fumble in 22 carries. 

Defensively, the Broncos allow 13 points per game. Linebacker Alex Singleton leads the Broncos with 14 tackles. Safety Justin Simmons has nine tackles and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Bradley Chubb has two sacks for 18 yards, along with a forced fumble. Cornerback Ronald Darby has seven tackles and a forced fumble. Linebacker Randy Gregory has a sack and two forced fumbles. 

Prior to Sept. 23, notable players on the injury list for the 49ers included Lance (IR), tight end Tyler Kroft (out), offensive tackle Colton McKivitz (questionable), offensive tackle Daniel Brunskill (out), and defensive end Arik Armstead (questionable).

Before Sept. 23, the Broncos had five key players listed as questionable: wide receiver KJ Hamler, wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland, Jones, linebacker Josey Jewell, and cornerback Pat Surtain II. 

The 49ers are favored by a point against the Broncos. For the money line, it’s 49ers -125 and Broncos +105. The over/under is set for 44 points. With both defenses appearing solid, figure on the under holding. 

The Broncos will edge the 49ers to cover the spread and earn a second straight victory.
