Creighton gets the nod from the oddsmakers in this matchup as a seven-point home favorite. The total line has been opened at 137 points.

The Huskies dropped to 4-2 straight-up (5-1 against the spread) in Big East play with a four-point loss at home to St. John’s this past Monday. This was the first time they failed to cover in their last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five contests.

UConn lost to Creighton 76-74 on Dec. 20 in its Big East opener as a four-point home underdog. The total went OVER 145 points. This was the first meeting between the two teams. Connecticut has won its last five road games SU while going 4-1 ATS.

The Bluejays have lost their last two games (SU and ATS) while closing as favorites. A four-point loss to Providence as -10.5-point home favorites was the sixth time they failed to cover in their last nine games.

The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six outings. Creighton is 7-2 SU at home this season with a 4-5 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four home games.

With the loss of guard James Bouknight (20.3 points) due to an elbow injury, the Huskies have turned to guards’ Tyrese Martin (11.0 points) and R.J. Cole (10.6 points) to pick up the slack.

Martin scored 14 points with six rebounds in the recent loss to St. John’s. Cole was the leading scorer in that game with 18 points while going 6-for-16 from the field. Forward Isaiah Whaley added eight rebounds in the losing cause.

The Huskies are averaging 72.8 points per game while shooting 43% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range. They are pulling down an average of 38.3 rebounds a game while holding opposing teams to 63.1 PPG.

However, losing Bouknight indefinitely takes a huge chunk out of the offensive numbers for this team.

Creighton will try and regroup around guards’ Denzel Mahoney and Marcus Zegarowski. The duo is averaging a combined 29.4 points with 8.8 rebounds.

Forward Damien Jefferson is averaging 13.0 PPG and forward Christian Bishop (11.5 points) leads the team in rebounds with 5.4 a game.

It all adds up to a scoring average of 81.1 PPG with a 49% shooting average from the field. The Bluejays are converting on 36.7% of their shots from three-point range.

Defensively, they are giving up an average of 69.4 PPG.

The Huskies’ fast start in their new conference is bound to slow down a bit with their best player out of the lineup. Creighton remains a much better team than the one we have seen in its last two games. This sets the stage for a Bluejays’ victory on Saturday afternoon that should cover the current spread with relative ease.

I also have Creighton controlling the pace of this game with a much better effort on defense for the entire 40 minutes. This should keep the scoring low enough to stay UNDER the total line.
