INDIANA HOOSIERS VS. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS PREDICTIONS

The Indiana Hoosiers will look to snap a two-game losing streak after falling to Northwestern 51-59 on Tuesday. Indiana was missing five players, including starting guards Xavier Johnson and Parker Stewart due to a curfew violation. All five of these players will return for the Michigan State matchup. Indiana has not seen success in the past when playing Michigan State on the road, with a 2-19 record in their last 21 matchups. The Hoosiers are currently eighth in the Big 10 with a 7-6 conference record.

The 17th ranked Michigan State Spartans will also look to snap a two-game losing streak after a home loss to the 14th ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday. It is the first time this season that the Spartans have lost multiple games in a row. Michigan State is fourth in the Big 10 with an 8-4 conference record, just 1.5 games behind Wisconsin and Illinois for the top spot. While it may not be a must win, this is a very big game for Michigan State if they want a chance at the Big 10 regular season title.

Indiana has proved it can play with the top teams in the Big 10 with quality wins against both Ohio State (14-6) and Purdue (21-4) earlier in the season. This is definitely a game they can win but I like Michigan State in a bounce back game here. If this game were in Indiana, I would probably back the Hoosiers, but with the amount of success Michigan State has seen at home against Indiana I have to lay the points with Izzo and the Spartans.

INDIANA HOOSIERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-7
  • ATS: 13-10
  • O/U: 9-14

Indiana has posted an above .500 ATS record going 13-10 on the season thus far. Road games have been a different story, going 1-6 ATS on the season and 1-10 ATS in their last 11 road games. The total has gone over just nine times this season for the Hoosiers and has gone under in 12 of their last 17 games against Big 10 opponents.

The Hoosiers win games because of their defense, but the offense has had some solid outings throughout the season. Entering Saturday’s matchup, they are averaging 72 PPG (161st), 14.8 APG (74th), 46 FG% (65th), 34.3 3PT% (154th), and 37.5 RPG (72nd). The offense runs through sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis who is averaging 17.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG, and shooting 57.8% from the field. Getting junior guard Xavier Johnson back into the starting lineup is big for the Hoosiers. Johnson is averaging 10 points and almost five assist per game and his presence was obviously missed during the Northwestern game.

Defense is Indiana’s bread and butter. They are allowing 63.3 PPG (36th), 37.3 FG% (6th), 30.7 3PT%(59th), while averaging 5.8 SPG (258th), and 5.5 BPG (14th). The Hoosiers will need to create offensive opportunities on the defensive end, meaning they are not going to win this game by scoring 80 points. Indiana will need to take advantage of Michigan State’s weakness, that being turnovers. The Spartans are worst in the Big 10 at turning the ball over (14).

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 17-6
  • ATS: 12-10-1
  • O/U: 11-11-1

Michigan State has been average ATS on the season with a 12-11 record. The Spartans are just 3-6 ATS in their last nine games as well as 3-6 ATS in their last nine games against Big 10 opponents. The total has gone over 11 times this season for Michigan State and has gone under in five of the last seven games against Indiana.

The Spartans offense do not necessarily have one guy they rely on but rather play good old fashion team basketball. On the season they are averaging 73.2 PPG (29th), 16.1 APG (31st), 46.2 FG%, 38.8 3PT% (11th), and 38.1 RPG (55th). Michigan State will look to run in transition and get quick baskets on the offensive end. They will also want to take advantage of their three-point shooting. Although Indiana defends the three ball well, if Michigan State can get a few to fall from deep, it may be the difference maker in this one.

Aside from the last two games, Michigan States defense has looked good throughout the season. The Spartans are allowing 66.5 PPG (109th), 40.5 FG% (53rd), 30 3PT% (39th), and averaging 6 SPG (240th), and 5.8 BPG (9th). Michigan State will need to focus on shutting down Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson. Easier said than done, but if they can manage to slow these guys down it should set them up for success in this matchup.

Michigan State is 13-2 SU in their last 15 home games. (AP)

INDIANA HOOSIERS VS. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS BETTING CONCLUSION

This should be one of many great college basketball games this weekend. Indiana is a tough defensive team and is not an easy matchup for Michigan State. I think it will be close the majority of the contest but I like Michigan State to prevail in the end. Having lost two straight and their eyes focused on a Big 10 championship, I have faith in coach Izzo to steer his ball club in the right direction. Laying the points with the Spartans in this one.
