Betting on the Arizona State Sun Devils

College football fans and bettors are mostly pleased with the trajectory on which Head Coach Herm Edwards has the Sun Devils. Arizona State is gradually emerging as a contender in a conference that has been lacking spice.

Arizona State Sun Devils History

Arizona State football has been around for nearly 100 years, but the Sun Devils didn’t experience significant success until the ‘50s under Dan Devine and later Frank Kush.

Kush took the helm in 1958 and remained there until 1979. Throughout his tenure, ASU made waves nationally.

From 1970-1973, the Sun Devils piled up an impressive 43-4 record that included four consecutive bowl wins. The team made five Fiesta Bowl appearances under Kush as well, winning four of them.

Kush was fired in 1979 for interfering with the school’s investigation of accusations a former player had made against him. After Kush’s controversial dismissal, Arizona State recovered by sporadically putting together good seasons in the ‘80s and ‘90s, including a Rose Bowl victory on New Year’s Day, 1987.

Since then, the Sun Devils have found success under Bruce Snyder, Dirk Koetter, Todd Graham, and now Herm Edwards. The program hasn’t returned to consistent national relevance in a while, but Edwards and his team are making strides.

Betting on the Sun Devils in Arizona

Both retail and online sports betting went live in the Grand Canyon State on September 9th, 2021. The plan was always for Arizona to launch its betting market in time for the 2021-22 NFL season, and they did just that, launching on the day of the season opener.

While the Sun Devils don’t have a sportsbook partner, professional teams in Arizona have set the tone nationally when it comes to partnership deals. All of the state’s teams in the country’s major professional sports leagues have official sportsbook partners.

There are over a dozen legal sports betting apps in Arizona, and the state has shown its willingness to let that number grow in the future. FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars are all available, among other sportsbooks.

Bettors looking to place a wager on the Sun Devils can expect to see something like this on one of the state’s available apps:

-          Arizona State Sun Devils -10.5

-          Arizona Wildcats +10.5

Here, the Sun Devils are double-digit favorites over the Wildcats. Bettors taking Arizona State -10.5 need at least an 11-point victory. If Arizona State wins by fewer than 11 points, or loses outright, Arizona covers the spread.
