At the Gate – Friday

In addition to our once a year venture out to Parx Racing for a pair of Grade 1 races on Saturday we have an excellent 11-race card on tap at Belmont Park on tomorrow afternoon featuring a pair of graded stakes races.

The $300,000 Kelso Handicap (G2) serves as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and drew a field of seven with Catholic Boy missing the race due to a rear suspensory issue.

Prince Lucky was installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite. The Todd Pletcher trainee won the State Dinner at Belmont Park on July 7 in an impressive win. A winner of 7 of his 13 career starts, Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez has the return call on the gelding.

Among his foes is Pat On the Back (3-1) who has won two of his three starts this year, winning the state bred Affirmed Success and Commentator before running third in the restricted Tale of the Cat.

True Timber (9-2), who was the runner up in last year’s Cigar Mile (G1) makes his first start since a ninth-place finish in the Godolphin Mile (G2) in March in Dubai.

The co-feature tomorrow at Belmont Park is the $200,000 Noble Damsel (G3), a one-mile test on turf for fillies and mares that drew a field of six.

The Chad Brown trained Significance Form is the 2-1 morning line favorite. The filly won the Ballston Spa (G2) in her last outing.

Friday’s card kicks off at 3:00 ET and the NYRA announced that post time will revert back to 1:00 starting next week.

They also announced that the meeting will continue at Belmont Park until Oct. 27. There was talk of moving the second half of the meeting to Aqueduct due to the construction of the new arena for the New York Islanders at Belmont Park, but the work has not been an issue during the first few weeks of the meeting.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package. It gives you a month of Belmont Park Reports daily and my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N3L (3:00 ET)
#8 Evan's Nice Now 6-1
#3 Camorra 5-2
#5 Trouble for Skylar 8-5
#1 Tequila Sunday 6-1

Analysis: Evan's Nice Now
set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner late in a runner up finish at Monmouth Park against restricted $16,000 claimers. Three back over the main track here she beat $25,000 non-winners of two in her second start against winners and for Toscano off the claim. She owns a solid pace profile throughout, and the 6-1 morning line looks fair enough. Camorra
had a clear led heading for home but hit the brakes inside the final furlong in a third-place finish against $20,000 non-winners of three last out at the Spa in her second start off the bench. She was claimed by RRod who is 28% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim, taking this gal from Pletcher. She showed some promise last year breaking her maiden in her debut and then beating state bred Alw-1 foes in her third career start. She makes her third start off the bench here and is a logical thereat to win in the opener.

BEL Race 6 Md Sp Wt (5:37 ET)
#2 Lifetime Memory 10-1
#5 Tap to My Lu 5-1
#1 Royal Flag 3-1
#7 Bell Court 2-1

Analysis: Lifetime Memory
makes her debut for the Clement barn that is 14% winners with firs timers. The filly is working quickly in the mornings and looks as if she is going to be a decent price in this spot. She is by Istan out of the stakes winner Silver Reunion ($254,403) who has dropped five foals to race with four winners, top earner graded stakes placed More Fun Again ($186,863).

Tap to My Lu is one of two firsters in here sent out by the Brown barn that is 20% winners with first timers. She was a $500,000 purchase, by Tapit out of the stakes winners winner Sweet Lulu ($693,600). She has a solid string of works on the morning tab and Brown has started off this meeting sending out live runners, winning at a 29% clip overall. This may end up the higher price of the Brown duo.
