At the Gate – Friday

We started off the week at Belmont Park very chalky on Thursday, with the early Pick 5 yesterday returning just $80.50 for a $1. The winners in the first five races paid $8.40, $3.30, $6.00, $3.20 and $3.30.

We did see a couple of prices late, Mo Maverick paying $20.40 in the sixth and Bull Feather pulling off the upset in the eight and final, returning $32.60 with the Pick 5 coming back at $2,147.50.

Friday’s card could start off chalky as well as we have a couple of short fields and short priced favorites. We have Dubai Bobby who is the 3-5 morning line favorite in the opener who could get things off to a chalky start.

Things look up for this weekend as we have a good 10-race card at Belmont Park featuring a pair of stakes.

The feature is the $200,000 Sands Point for three-year-fillies that drew a field of seven. The Chad Brown trained New and Improved is the 5-2 morning line favorite coming off a fourth in the Riskaverse in her last outing.

The $100,000 Floral Park drew eight fillies and mares that will go six furlongs on the turf. Fire Key, trained by James Ryerson is the 5-2 morning line favorite. She has landed in the exacta in seven of her nine trips on the turf at Belmont Park.

We will head out to Keeneland on Saturday where the feature is the $600,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1). In addition, my Best Plays will include the stakes action from Woodbine. There are three graded stakes including the $800,000 Pattison Canadian International (G1) and the $600,000 E.P. Taylor (G1).

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package . It gives you a month of Belmont Park Reports daily my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday and my two-day Breeders’ Cup Report.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $40,000 (1:15 ET)
#6 Happy Danza 4-1
#3 Dubai Bobby 3-5
#4 Upham 6-1
#1 Macho Boy 6-1

Analysis: Happy Danza drops in for a tag for his second career start after checking in sixth in his debut at 42-1 in a field of eight on yielding turf at the Spa. The colt was a $55,000 purchase by Danza out of a Malibu Moon mare, her first foal to race. The Handal barn has won with 4 of his last 9 (with a +ROI) dropping runners from maiden special to maiden claiming. Worth another look here over what likely will be firmer ground. Dubai Bobby also drops in for a tag for the first time after a third in his debut and then regressing last out in a seventh-place finish on dirt. Blinkers go on here on this son of Shanghai Bobby who is out of a Broken Vow mare, her first foal to race. If he runs back to his debut effort on turf he will be tough to beat in this spot. Wagering

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 6 Alw $66,000N1X (4:05 ET)
#4 Bronx Bomber 12-1
#5 Financialstability 4-5
#7 Our Last Buck 6-1
#2 Foolish Ghost 12-1

Analysis: Bronx Bomber tracked the early pace and tired to finish a well beaten eighth last out at this level in the slop. The gelding put in two good efforts in his last two trips here, three back in the slop and four back here on a main track, both runner up finishes. He could wake up here catching a fast main track for the first time since May. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and the 12-1 morning line looks more than fair to give this guy a good look.

Financialstability faces winners for the first time here after a sharp looking maiden win last out in his second career start. The gelding stalked the early pace, made a good middle move to take command and held on to win by 1 3/4 lengths. The gelding earned the top last out speed fig and if he runs back to his last outing here, he will be tough to beat, but his price is going to be on the light side.
