Wednesday’s Picks from Saratoga

Tropical Storm Isaias stormed through Saratoga Springs yesterday dropping a couple of inches of rain in the area but the weather looks good for Wednesday as we start the week and I am hoping we might still be on the turf.

The rain stopped around 8:00 last night, and I am hoping that is enough time for the turf course to dry out enough to avoid shifting the races over the main track.

We are now three weeks into the meeting and trainer Christophe Clement is showing no signs of slowing down. The Frenchman still leads the trainer standings with 15 wins from his 44 starters, winning at a 34% clip. The trainer sends out runners today in three races.

Todd Pletcher has saddled 11 winners from his 39 starters, winning at a 28% clip. Mike Maker has moved up to third in the standings with 10 winners from 38 starters.

Chad Brown, who won the training title here the past two summers by large margins is now fourth in the standings with nine winners form 52 starters, winning at a 17% clip. Brown has just two starters in today, both in the ninth race.

The jockey race figures to go right down to the wire. Irad Ortiz Jr. has taken over the lead with 24 winners, Joel Rosario has 23 and Jose Ortiz is third with 22 winners.

The opening race today was a steeplechase race which has been cancelled due to the heavy rains that fell yesterday.

Saratoga Race 2 Analysis

SAR Race 2 Clm $16,000N2L (1:21 ET)
#5 The Joke's On You 3-1
#6 Naughty Prince 9-5
#8 Mine the Coin 4-1
#2 Icy Dude 6-1

Analysis: The Joke's On You
returns off a 5 1/2-month layoff here for the Rice barn that is 17% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180-day layoff. In his first go for the barn off the claim the gelding took the field gate to wire, drawing away to win by 13 1/4 lengths. He now tries to stretch out to nine furlongs here and should be able to do t, by Distorted Humor out of a A.P. Indy mare. He catches an easy looking spot for his first start against winners.

Naughty Prince stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to break his maiden in his debut at Keeneland for the Ward barn. That outing came at seven furlongs and now he stretches out to a route here. He is by Into Mischief out of a Proud Citizen mare. He looks as if he has plenty of upside and is bred to handle a wet track which we may see today.

Saratoga Race 8 Analysis
8/3 (4:46 p.m. ET)

SAR Race 8 Clm $50,000 (4:46 ET)
#7 Prompt 10-1
#6 Super Dude 7-2
#2 Intrepid Heart 3-1
#1 Winston's Chance 8-1

Analysis: Prompt
gets the call in a wide open race. The five-year-old drops out of stakes company where last out he was outrun in the slop in the Flat Out going 1 3/8 miles. The winner Moretti came back to run second in the Suburban and then win the Birdstone here. Two and three back he was in too tough in Grade 3 company. Last May he beat Alw-2 optional claimers at nine furlongs at Belmont Park. This looks like a good spot here in for a $50,000 tag and he is in good hands with Mott. His best puts him in the mix here and he should end up a decent price.

Super Dude tracked the early pace and made a mild late rally to finish third last out against $40,000 foes over a wet track. He was third for this tag tow back going a one turn mile at Churchill Downs. He does have a win at nine furlongs. coming here last summer against $40,000 foes. This guy owns solid early and mid pace numbers and a wet track would not hurt his chances, he has won 2 of 4 on off going.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
