Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Betting Predictions

The Yankees won game two of three on Saturday with a final score of 4-2. New York had just four hits throughout the day, but two of those hits were 2-run home runs. The Red Sox had five total hits on the day with their only runs coming from a 2-run home run in the second inning. Luis Severino lasted 3.0 just innings and gave up two runs and all five of Boston’s hits. Boston’s Nick Pivetta lasted 5.2 innings and gave up all of four of New York’s hits and runs.

Right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck is expected to take the mound for Boston on Sunday. Houck was 1-5 last season with an ERA of 3.52 and had 87.0 strikeouts in 69.0 innings. Against the Yankees last season, Houck gave up four runs in 12.2 innings pitched. The leftie Jordan Montgomery is scheduled to start for New York. Montgomery was 6-7 last season with an ERA of 3.83 and struck out 162 batters in 157.1 innings. In five games against Boston last season, Montgomery allowed 10 runs in 26.2 innings of work.

Going back to last season the Red Sox have not had much success against New York, losing seven straight at Yankee Stadium. For that reason, I like the Yankees moneyline here, but do think Boston will capitalize a bit more with runners in scoring position and push the total over 9.5 runs.

Boston Red Sox Betting Analysis

  • SU: 0-2
  • RL: 1-1
  • O/U: 1-1

After the second game of the season Boston is now 0-2 SU, 1-1 run line, and have an O/U record of 1-1. Going back to last season, the total has gone over in 9 of Boston’s last 11 games played. Saturday’s loss makes it the seventh straight game the Red Sox have lost at Yankee Stadium.

Boston had a 2-0 lead after the second inning but could not get anything going after New York took out starting pitcher Luis Severino in the fourth. The two runs scored came off a 2-run home run by left fielder Alex Verdugo. Other than that home run Boston was 0-10 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox have now struggled in both games, going 2-22 with runners in scoring position.

The Red Sox sent out four different pitchers during Saturday’s game. Starter Nick Pivetta gave up all of New York’s offensive production, while the other three pitchers gave up no hits or runs in 3.1 innings of work. Right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck is scheduled to get the start for Boston on Sunday. Houck was 1-5 last season with an ERA of 3.52 and had 87.0 strikeouts in 69.0 innings of work. Against the Yankees last season, Houck gave up four runs in 12.2 innings pitched.

New York Yankees Betting Analysis

  • SU: 2-0
  • RL: 1-1
  • O/U: 1-1

The Yankees managed to get the job done again on Saturday and are now 2-0 SU, 1-1 run line, and have an O/U record of 1-1 with Saturday’s total going under the closing line of 9. Going back to last season, the total has now gone under in five of their last eight games and have won seven straight against Boston at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees had just four hits during Saturday’s game with two of those being home runs. Anthony Rizzo hit a 2-run shot in the fourth and Giancarlo Stanton did the same in the sixth. Similar to Boston, New York could not get anything going after the Red Sox pulled their starter. The Yankees were 1-2 with runners in scoring position and are now 2-10 with runners in scoring position on the year.

New York sent seven different pitchers to the mound Saturday. After using eight different pitchers on opening day, it’s clear that the Yankees are not afraid to use guys if they have too. After Luis Severino was pulled the other six pitchers did not allow a hit or run in a combined 6.0 innings of work. Leftie Jordan Montgomery is expected to start for New York. Montgomery was 6-7 last season with an ERA of 3.83 and struck out 162 batters in 157.1 innings. In five games against Boston last season, Montgomery allowed 10 runs in 26.2 innings of work.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Betting Conclusion

What better way to end the Yankees/Red Sox opening series than to have the final game on Sunday Night Baseball. The Red Sox have not had any luck with runners in scoring position while the Yankees have been showing off their power with five home runs over the last two games. I expect the Yankees to continue hitting bombs and the Red Sox to have a bit more success with runners in scoring position. With that being said, I like the total of 9.5 runs to go over as well as a Yankees win to sweep the series.
