Kings vs Mavericks

by Michael Crosson

Mavericks superstar PG Luka Doncic single-handedly carried Dallas to a win over the Hawks last night as he erupted for a career high 73 points on 76% from the floor and 8-of-13 from three-point range on the way to a 148-143 road victory.

Prior to last night’s win, however, the Mavericks were having a really rough month of January as they entered their previous affair on a frustrating 2-5 skid – while ranking 20th in offensive rating and 29th in defensive rating during that seven-game stretch.

While on the other side of that same coin, the Kings have also had their fair share of recent struggles. Prior to posting victories in their last two outings, the Kings lost four straight games to the Sixers, Bucks, Suns and Pacers – however, one of those losses came in overtime in Milwaukee, another came by a score of 119-117 in Phoenix, and a pair of midseason losses to Philly and Indiana is nothing to hang their head about.

This feels like a great spot to fade the Mavs on the second half of a back-to-back. Luka pulled a rabbit out of his hat in Atlanta last night and Dallas managed to snap a three-game losing streak. But let’s not jump to any drastic conclusions. Surrendering 143 points to the Hawks (with no Trae Young) isn’t exactly a positive sign.

Pick: Kings -3 (-110)

Lakers vs Warriors

Los Angeles Lakers +2.5 (-110)

It's not happening for the Warriors, who at 19-23 are rapidly running out of time before perhaps deciding to start selling off prices of the once-championship core. The defense was again soft and turnovers too frequent in the Thursday loss at Chase Center vs. the Kings. Steve Kerr can no longer hide the lack of athleticism on the roster, and the return of Draymond Green has hardly moved the needed. Meanwhile, LeBron returned from a brief absence for the lake Show's wild Thursday win at Crypto.com over the Bulls. Speaking of Chase Center, Golden State is only 12-12 at home this season.
