Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns Picks, Predictions, Odds

Regular season NBA action will resume on Wednesday night with a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s Western Conference Semi-Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. Coverage begins from Footprint Center at 10:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

DALLAS MAVERICKS vs. PHOENIX SUNS BETTING PREDICTION

The Suns earned the top seed in the West with a record of 64-18 last season, which was the best record in the entire league by an eight-game margin. However, their postseason journey came to an abrupt halt in the second round, as the Suns posted a sunning 30-point home loss to Dallas in Game 7 of the conference semis.

Dallas, on the other hand, finished fourth in the West with a record of 52-30 last year, marking the Mavs’ best regular season campaign since their title winning squad back in 2010-11, and their trip to the conference finals marks their deepest playoff run during that time frame as well.

Last year’s conference semis matchup between the Suns and Mavericks was one of the weirdest playoff series in recent memory, as five of the seven matchups were decided by double-digit margins, and four of them were decided by margins of 20+ PTS. After averaging 114 PPG on 49% FG throughout the season, the Suns scored just 90 PTS on 38% from the field in Game 7 against Dallas, and I expect that lasting disappointment to cause the pendulum to swing back towards Phoenix on opening night.

Score Prediction: Suns 115, Mavericks 106
Best Bet: Suns -4.5 (-110)

DALLAS MAVERICKS BETTING ANALYSIS

The Mavericks finished fourth in the West with a record of 52-30 last season, which came in 12 games behind Phoenix for the top seed in the conference, however, it trailed Memphis by just four games and Golden State by just one game for the second and third seeds.

It wasn’t always pretty for Dallas, as the Mavericks finished the year ranked 24th in scoring and 19th in team shooting percentage at the offensive end (108 PPG, 46% FG). However, when you also surrender less than 105 PPG and rank sixth in the league in defensive rating (109.4 DRtg), you can still win a bunch of games in this league.

PHOENIX SUNS BETTING ANALYSIS

The Suns posted the best record in the entire league by nearly 10 games last season, so pretty much anything short of a championship would’ve been considered a letdown, but their second-round loss to the Mavericks was quite the disappointment, especially after going 3-0 against Dallas during the regular season.

Phoenix played excellent at both sides of the floor last year, as the Suns finished the year ranked fourth in offensive rating and third in defensive rating (114.8 ORtg, 107.3 DRtg). They still haven’t figured out how to harness that same consistency in the playoffs, but don’t get it twisted, this is a phenomenal regular season team.
