  • Opening point spread: Chiefs -2.5
  • Opening moneyline: Chiefs -140/Jaguars +120
  • Opening total: Over/Under 50.5 points scored
  • Time: 1 p.m. ET Sunday (CBS)

UPDATE 5:30 P.M. ET FRIDAY: K.C. opened as a 2.5-point chalk Sunday night at BetMGM. The line advanced to Chiefs -3 Monday and has since made a couple trips to -3.5, where it sits now, at -105 juice.

It's all Chiefs early on the spread, at 84% of tickets/90% of money, including smarter action.

"Sharp bettors are on the Chiefs to bounce back in Jacksonville in Week 2," BetMGM trader Seamus Magee said.

The total opened at 50.5 and touched 51.5 a couple times, the latest coming this morning. Ticket count is 2/1-plus and money 7/1 on the Over.

UPDATE 4 P.M. ET WEDNESDAY: TwinSpires Sportsbook pegged K.C. -2.5 to open, spent time at -3 and just went to -3.5. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (knee), who missed Week 1, practiced in a limited capacity today. And disruptive defensive lineman Chris Jones, who ended his holdout Monday, practiced and is expected to play Sunday.

All that noted, it's two-way spread play at TwinSpires, with 53% of early tickets on the Jags/55% of early money on the Chiefs.

"Great two-way action so far, midweek," Lucas said.

The total opened at 50.5 and is now at 51, with ticket count 2.5/1 and money almost 5/1 on the Over.

"Like with any K.C. game, the Over is a very popular play," Lucas said.

UPDATE 10 P.M. ET SUNDAY: Defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City was dealt a stunning Week 1 setback on its home field. The Chiefs (0-1 SU and ATS) closed as 4-point home favorites against Detroit and lost 21-20.

Jacksonville (1-0 SU and ATS) got two late-fourth-quarter TDs to put away Indianapolis 31-21. The Jags got the cover giving 3.5 points on the road.

These two teams met in the AFC Divisional Round last season. Kansas City won 27-20, but Jacksonville cashed as a 10-point road underdog.

"We were at Kansas City -3 on the lookahead [last week] and re-opened -2.5 after K.C.'s struggles on Thursday night," Michaelson said. "Some of this will depend on the health of Travis Kelce. But we felt re-opening at 3 on the road would be inviting more of the wiseguys [on Jacksonville].

"We expect the public to load up on Kansas City, as they typically would, especially if there's positive news on Kelce's health."

The line and total are stable tonight in The SuperBook's NFL odds Week 2 market.

Chiefs vs Jaguars Pick, Prediction

Action Network NFL betting expert Brandon Anderson offers this prediction:

These teams played twice last year and the Chiefs won both, 27-17 in the regular season and 27-20 in the playoffs. Neither was as close as the final score, with garbage time Jaguars scores in both, and that despite Patrick Mahomes leaving briefly with injury in the playoff game.

All the focus will be on Mahomes vs. Trevor Lawrence, but the Jaguars pass defense is the obvious weak link. Jacksonville ranked 30th in pass defense DVOA last year, and Mahomes mostly had his way against them in both games.

Star Chiefs defender Chris Jones has signed and returned to the team, and it looks like Travis Kelce will likely return from injury as well.

Remarkably, this will be the first game of Mahomes' career under .500. He's 13-3 SU after a loss, with every win by at least three and an average winning margin of 15.0 PPG. The Chiefs don't lose often, and when they do, they typically respond immediately. Mahomes has been lights out anytime he's anything shorter than a 3.5-point favorite, at 19-6-1 ATS (76%) including playoffs.

You don't get many chances to bet Mahomes as a short favorite after a loss. Say thanks and place your bet — but if you're new to betting, remember that it makes sense to check out different sportsbooks to see where you can find the best lines. Right now, FanDuel, where you might already be signed up, has the Chiefs at -3.5. A place like Caesars, meanwhile, has Kansas City -3. That extra half-point matters.
