It wasn’t a great Week 1 for the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee was blown out by Arizona last week, as Kyler Murray dazzled in a 38-13 victory. The Titans will now have to face another team from the toughest division in football (the NFC West) when they head to the Emerald City to face the Seattle Seahawks.
Russell Wilson led the Seahawks to a comfortable road win over the Indianapolis Colts last week. He didn’t have to throw the ball much, attempting just 23 passes, but he averaged 11.0 YPA and threw four touchdowns as Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf complement each other very well in the passing game.
The ground game was able to churn out 5.2 YPC led by Chris Carson. Seattle is hoping that Carson can stay healthy this year, as he has missed at least one game in all four seasons as a pro. Carson averaged 4.8 YPC in 2020 as one of the most effective running backs in the game.
It was surprising to see Derrick Henry shut down by Arizona’s defense last week. Henry could only average 3.4 YPC against the Cardinals, and if you take out a 19-yard run, the 2,000-yard rusher only averaged 2.5 YPC. It could be tough sledding for King Henry again this week, as Poona Ford is a superb run stuffer, and the linebackers do a good job filling holes.
For Tennessee to leave Seattle with a win, Ryan Tannehill will have to beat a mediocre secondary. Tannehill largely succeeds on play action due to the threat of Henry, but he hasn’t been as sharp when Henry is bottled up. The Titans do have some excellent receivers in A.J. Brown and Julio Jones, so Tannehill does have the potential to beat these defensive backs, but that is something he has had a tough time doing consistently in his 10-year career.
Wilson and the Seahawks will be too much for the Titans this Sunday. Metcalf and Lockett should have little trouble getting open against this Tennessee secondary, and Gerald Everett is a red zone monster. Tannehill won’t be able to consistently take the top off the defense with Henry contained, stalling out the Titans’ offense.
