Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers Predictions

After finishing last in the NFC West with a record of 6-10 last year, San Francisco jumped out to a surprisingly excellent start to the new season, as the Niners kicked things off with solid victories over the Lions and Eagles back in Weeks 1 and 2.

Since their 2-0 start though, San Francisco has reverted back to total mediocrity, considering the Niners enter Monday’s contest following losses in five of their last six games – with their only victory across that time frame coming over an ailing Bears’ squad.

On the other hand, L. A. took virtually no time settling in with newly acquired signal-caller Matthew Stafford, as the Rams kicked off the season with wins in seven of their first eight games – with their only loss across that window coming to the Cardinals (L, 37-20).

The Rams stumbled across a slight road bump during their latest matchup though, considering Stafford and company generated just 16 PTS on a season-low 347 YDS during their head-scratching double-digit home loss to Tennessee last week.

I’ll lay the points with L. A. here, as the Niners are 0-3 SU and ATS in NFC West matchups this season – and I doubt their first divisional victory will come against a legitimate powerhouse contender like the Rams.

Los Angeles Rams Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 7-2
  • ATS: 4-5
  • O/U: 5-3-1
  • ATS - Home: 2-3
  • ATS - Away: 2-2

When a team immediately tosses a new starting quarterback into action Week 1, it typically takes a few weeks to settle into a rhythm offensively – but that is far from the truth for Stafford and the Rams. The Rams’ offense carried them through the early parts of the year, considering L. A. averaged 28.8 PPG across Weeks 1 through 4 – while allowing 24.75 PPG defensively across that same window. Their defense has valiantly bounced back across the last five games though (19.4 PPG, 10 TO) – quickly elevating the Rams into legitimate contender territory within the NFC.

San Francisco 49ers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 3-5
  • ATS: 2-6
  • O/U: 5-3
  • ATS - Home: 0-4
  • ATS - Away: 2-2

After falling a field goal shy of beating Green Bay for a third straight victory to start the season (L, 30- 28), San Francisco drew another tough matchup in the Seahawks in Week 4 – and that’s when things noticeably took a downward, as QB Jimmy Garoppolo exited with a calf injury and turned over the keys to rookie Trey Lance for the remainder of the Niners’ second loss of the year.

Most don’t seem overly concerned about the Niners, as they currently sit at 3-5, and played two-and-a- half games with their backup quarterback. They also played strikingly competitive games against the Eagles and Lions in Weeks 1 and 2 though – and if they lost one of those, we would likely be viewing San Francisco from a much harsher perspective.

Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Conclusion

After having a four-game winning streak snapped by Tennessee last week, the Rams will travel to San Francisco as a four-point favorite over the Niners at Levi’s Stadium – marking the first time San Francisco has been an underdog at home this year.

I’ll lay the points with L.A. here, as the Rams rank fifth in the league in scoring at 29 PPG, while the Niners have scored 21 PTS or less in five of their last seven games (20.6 PPG) – so, I’m also backing Stafford to make it a solid four-of-five games with at least three touchdown passes.
