Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New England Patriots Predictions

The New England Patriots are huge favorites over the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. New England has not looked good with losses in consecutive weeks, but Jacksonville is the panacea that cures all for most teams. The Jaguars are the worst team in the NFL for the second straight year, and they will be looking to lock up the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

New England is the biggest favorite in Week 17. The Patriots are currently tied with the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC East, and they know that a victory will likely lock up a playoff spot. That has led to a flurry of action on New England, but this number is a little too high. Jacksonville hasn’t been great, yet the weather will cooperate and help the Jaguars keep this game within the number.

Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-13
  • ATS: 4-11
  • O/U: 4-11
  • ATS - Away: 2-5

The Jaguars have yet to win a road game this season. Jacksonville is 0-7 on the road, and this team hasn’t covered a spread since mid-November.

Trevor Lawrence has had a rocky rookie season, but he showed some potential in last week’s loss to the New York Jets. Lawrence completed 26 of 39 passes for 290 yards, and he had the Jaguars on the one-yard line with a chance to win the game. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass since Thanksgiving weekend though, so it’s hard to expect Jacksonville to score a lot of points.

This ground game is a mess without James Robinson. Jacksonville’s starting running back was placed on injured reserve last week, and that means Dare Ogunbowale will be the top back with veteran Carlos Hyde on injured reserve.

There is some talent at receiver as Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. are a decent tandem, but the tight end situation is a mess and Shenault is questionable. This offensive line might be without four starters too because of COVID protocols.

Jacksonville doesn’t have a lot of talent on defense. The Jaguars could be without multiple starters because of COVID, but they play hard on this side of the ball and do have talent at linebacker. Josh Allen can get to the quarterback, and Myles Jack is still playing well.

New England Patriots Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 9-6
  • ATS: 9-6
  • O/U: 7-8
  • ATS - Home: 4-4

Mac Jones has not been good in recent weeks. His first half numbers over the last month have been abysmal, and he has thrown four interceptions in his last two games. Jones isn’t a mobile threat, so if defenses have keyed in on his tendencies, it will be hard for him to move the chains.

The Patriots have had success running the ball with Damien Harris though. Harris has run for 857 yards (4.7 YPC) and 12 touchdowns, and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson has been able to move the chains too. That’s good considering Harris is questionable this Sunday with a hamstring injury.

These receivers aren’t anything special. Nelson Agholor is out and Jakobi Meyers is questionable, and that further tests the depth of this position group. Kendrick Bourne will be the main target, while tight end Hunter Henry is a major red zone threat with nine touchdowns.

New England has the best defense in the league. The Patriots rank first in scoring defense (17.3 PPG), third in total defense (315.5 YPG), and second in pass defense. They might be without several great players on Sunday though. Matthew Judon has been ruled out, and Dont’a Hightower, Christian Barmore, J.C. Jackson, and Kyle Duggar are all questionable.

New England has failed to cover the spread in two straight games. (AP)

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New England Patriots Betting Conclusion

Jacksonville is going to lose this game, but the Jaguars can stay within the number. New England’s defense won’t be as formidable with so many players out, and that will let Jacksonville keep it close enough.
