EDMONTON OILERS vs. COLORADO AVALANCHE PREDICTIONS

If Game 1 was any indication, we're in for a wild ride at Ball Arena for Game 2, as well as the remainder of the series. Of course, the Edmonton-Calgary series started off in similar fashion to Game 1 in this series, and things settled down a little bit.

In the series opener, the Avalanche outscored the Oilers 3-2...in the first period. In the second period, Colorado outscored Edmonton 4-1, and the Oilers edged the Avalanche 2-1 in the third. When the dust cleared, Colorado ended up hanging on for a wild 8-6 victory.

Evander Kane opened the score just 5:04 into the game, but J.T. Compher answered 36 seconds later. For the next 10 minutes, we actually had some defense before Nathan MacKinnon entered the chat at 15:10 with his ninth goal of the postseason. Zach Hyman leveled the game at 2-2 with 23 seconds left, before Cale Makar scored an unassisted goal just nine seconds later on a controversial instant review. Makar entered the zone, and Valeri Nichushkin appeared to be offside. He was...if you're from Edmonton. He wasn't...if you're from Denver, or if you had the OVER.

Nadem Kadri made it 4-2, before Ryan McLeod sliced the lead in half at 2:59 of the second, making it 4-3, and clinching the OVER. Mikko Rantanen and Comphere scored two more goals in the next few minutes, and Mike Smith was given a trip to the showers early.

Less than a minute after Smith was given the hook, Darcy Kuemper was forced out due to an upper-body injury, and head coach Jared Bednar was unable to offer an update on the goaltender's status Wednesday. Backup Pavel Francouz, pronounced FRAN-SOHZ, by the way, took the reins and stopped 18 of the 21 shots he faced in relief. The Avs never trailed, so Kuemper was awarded the victory, although Francouz likely will get his chance in Game 2.

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 57-31-7
  • ATS: 47-48
  • O/U: 50-42-3

The Oilers lost for the second time this postseason when scoring at least six goals. Both of those performances occurred in Game 1s. In Game 2 of the Flames series, the Oilers picked up a 5-3 road win, so they're hoping that lightning strikes twice.

The Oilers have picked up 21 victories in the past 29 games overall, while going 11-3 in the past 14 games after allowing five or more goals in the previous game. So things are looking up for Edmonton, especially if it gets to face the backup Francouz.

Edmonton has cashed the OVER in five of the past six games overall, while going 4-0 in the past four games on the road. The OVER is also 4-0 in the past four as an underdog, and 4-0 in the past four as a road 'dog, too.

COLORADO AVALANCHE BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 65-20-8
  • ATS: 46-47
  • O/U: 49-39-5

The Avalanche outlasted the Oilers with eight goals, and it's the fourth time in the past five games Colorado has lit the lamp at least four times in a game. It has three or more goals in five straight outings, too. That's 51 goals scored through 11 postseason games, or an average of 4.63 goals per game. That's why you're staring at totals of 7 or 7.5 being offered at most shops, a number which is unheard of, especially in the playoffs.

The Avs have won 56 of the past 69 home games, while going 53-19 in the past 72 games overall. The Avs are also 26-10 in the past 36 playoff games as a favorite, and an impressive 56-13 in the past 69 games as a home favorite.

The OVER is 4-1 in the past five games overall, while cashing in four of the past five playoff games as a favorite, too.

EDMONTON OILERS vs. COLORADO AVALANCHE CONCLUSION

The Oilers are hoping the fifth time is a charm, as they're 0-4 in the past four road games against the Avalanche, while winning just once in the past five meetings. The home team has dominated, too, going 6-1 in the past seven meetings, while the favorite is a perfect 7-for-7 in the past seven outings. The OVER is 6-2-1 in the past nine meetings, too.

The Oilers have a good shot to take down Francouz, but Smith needs to get his house in order, too, as well as the Edmonton defense. It's extremely doubtful we'll see a goal total in the teens again, but a double-digit total wouldn't be shocking. The best bet is the OVER, and I'd take a flier on the Oilers as long as Francouz makes the start in between the pipes.
