Gus Poyet knows a thing or two about the EPL.

VegasInsider sat down with him to get his thoughts on Chelsea's summer rebuild under Xabi Alonso, the futures of Cole Palmer, Garnacho and Enzo Fernandez, and what missing the Champions League really means for the club.

Key Takeaways:

  • Poyet believes the Cole Palmer to Manchester United link would be a mistake, arguing United can't accommodate both Palmer and Bruno Fernandez in the same side
  • On Garnacho: "He needs to stay away from pictures, stay away from silliness and just be a football player 24/7"
  • Poyet thinks Chelsea missing the Champions League is less of a crisis than it looks

Where do you think Chelsea need to strengthen next season? And who do you think in world football should Chelsea look to target as a potential signing?

Gus Poyet: "I think there are many, many possibilities. This is going to obviously be defined by Xabi Alonso.

"Are you going to play from the back using the goalkeeper a lot? OK, maybe you need to change the goalkeeper.

"Are you going to be playing in a high line with a solid back four? Maybe you need to get different players in defence.

"I think the most consistent player at Chelsea this year for me was [Marc] Cucurella.

"There Alonso has got a plus with him as he speaks Spanish.

"Then, are you going to build a team around Cole Palmer?

"Yes or no? If you do, then you have to have a good meeting with Enzo Fernández. Either he's going to play deeper or you need to move on from Fernández.

"So, like that, you can go through the team. That's kind of the situation.

"Are you going to play with a nine that needs to drop a link? Then you can play with Joao Pedro. But if you want a number nine inside the box, then you need a striker.

"So, depending on the team he wants to build, then Xabi Alonso will have to decide the characteristics of the player.

"I imagine that Xabi has done his homework and he has a clear idea of what to do. I realised, because of the timing, I think he has already got an idea of what he needs to do.

"So, let's see. It's going to be an interesting summer for Xabi."

Do you think Cole Palmer will stay amid Man Utd rumours? Do you think he would fit in with the squad? Do you think he would fit into Xabi Alonso's style of play?

GP: "I think Xabi can use him because he needs that kind of player around the box. I think that Manchester United, the link... I don't know.

"I cannot see it happening if you have Bruno Fernandes.

"I don't think you can make the same mistake as Chelsea did and try to take Bruno Fernandes from his best position to play Palmer. They would have the same issue.

"It would be stupid in my mind.

"I think it would be easier for Cole Palmer to become the player he was the year before, playing in his preferred position - around the striker and influencing the game. And for that, it's the work of the coach.

"How you're going to set up the team and how you're going to play.

"I've got a feeling that Xabi would like to keep him."

Garnacho joined Chelsea this season, and isn't a particular fan favorite. What have you made of his first season in a Chelsea shirt?

GP: "I think Garnacho needs to concentrate on football, and stop doing stupid things.

"Simple as that.

"If he concentrates on football and starts to focus on how to affect the game with his speed, directness, dribbling and tries be a threat. He's still young!

"He could be a great addition for the team, starting or coming off from the bench. If he keeps talking about previous coaches, stupidity, tattoos, fashion and nonsense, then he's not going to be liked.

"And if you are not liked by the Chelsea fans, it means that something is really wrong. Because just giving 100% every game, they will love you. So, something is not right.

"He needs to stay away from pictures, stay away from silliness and just be a football player 24/7."

Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a move to Real Madrid and Manchester City - how could you see him fitting in under Pep?

GP: "The style of play? I don't know. Manchester City is a different kind of team.

"There were massive players that played under Pep Guardiola, big names, massive names, and they were not able to play. So, it's not that simple. It would be interesting to see if he can do it.

"Real Madrid is a natural one because Real Madrid needs to reorganise and needs to settle down.

"If he has a good World Cup with Argentina, he's always a player that can be interesting for Real Madrid. But again, Real Madrid is going to change the coach as well.

"So…[shrugs]."

Fernandez is one of several players who could stake a claim at the World Cup this summer. Keep track of all the latest World Cup odds.

With Lewandowski close to the end of his contract, rumours about their interest in Joao Pedro continue to circulate. Given the appointment of Alonso, should Pedro stay at Chelsea? Or would it be better to go to Barca? Or do you think, again, someone like Lewandowski for a season could work?

GP: "I think you need to talk to Lewandowski to know how he is.

"His age, his aim and what he wants to do and position on the squad. Are you going to be a starter every game, or are you going to be a helper?

"Obviously, if Lewandowski is coming to play, Delap needs to move on and find a place to go and play and keep developing his game.

"Like I said before, it'll be an interesting summer for Chelsea.

"So plenty of movements, I would expect."

What do you make of what has gone on at Chelsea this season with managers… Maresca, Rosenior and now interim until the end of the season? Does this instability have an effect on players currently at the club and potential new players joining?

GP: "I think for the important players, it makes you think twice before staying. The appointment of Xabi Alonso right now is a plus.

"It was a very good decision to make it as soon as possible so the players know before going on holiday, or to the World Cup where they stand.

"They can even maybe talk to the coach before going so they know their position. And that's a plus. I think after the tumultuous season, at the end, it was the right decision made from my point of view.

"Let's hope that this settles down everything and everybody forgets about this season and starts from zero with a new coach and with a new identity."

Could some senior players look to move on as there is no Champions League football?

GP: "Yeah, you know what? It's a good shout out, but it's an easy one. I wanted to play in the Champions League when I was at Chelsea because I wanted to play against the best.

"But if you play every year, I suppose you play either because of financial reasons for the club or because you have a chance to win it.

"Don't tell me that these teams go to the Champions League every year and after the group stage, they get one point and they go out.

"The players want to be playing every year and lose every game?

"No. Me? No. I don't want to lose every game.

"Now, you have a chance to do well, surprise and win, fair enough.

"Even as a coach, don't give me a team that you cannot win a game. You know, you get out of the group.

"Now that you play, I don't how many games with different teams, home and away, with one team and another team - this Champions League is an absolute nightmare. Nobody understands it.

"I don't think it's that easy. For Chelsea, like I said, are you in a position now that you can win the Champions League? For me, no.

"Then if you build something important, you compete for the Premier League next year, maybe you win a domestic cup, then the following year, let's be in the Champions League and let's try to win it.

"But just playing for playing? I don't know.

"Now, financially, the club, I understand. Yes, we need that. Is it the case for Chelsea?

"I don't think so. Before playing in the Champions League, they were already spending one billion. I don't think the money is an issue.

"So let's make sure that we are stronger, competitive every game and then we think about the Champions League.

"So we'll see."
