The Carolina Panthers will take on the host New England Patriots on Friday night in Week 2 of the preseason. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET from Gillette Stadium. Coverage will be nationally televised on NFL Network.

The New York Giants narrowly defeated the host Patriots 23-21 in Week 1 of the preseason. Graham Gano converted a 24-yard field goal as time expired to give the Giants the victory. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones went 6-for-10 with 69 yards during his action. Antonio Williams rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Collin Johnson led the Giants with seven receptions for 82 yards.

Last season, the Panthers’ offense ranked 20th in rushing yards (108.4), and 29th in points (17.9) and passing yards (190.5). Darnold passed for 2,527 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Panthers legend Cam Newton, now a free agent, compiled 684 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions in his return to Carolina last season. 

Christian McCaffrey was limited to seven games last season and amassed 442 yards on the ground while going for 343 receiving yards. Chuba Hubbard was tops on the Panthers with 612 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. 

DJ Moore paced the Panthers with 93 receptions, 1,157 yards and four touchdowns. Robbie Anderson hauled in 519 yards and team-high five receiving touchdowns. 

Defensively, the Panthers ranked 21st in points allowed (23.8). The Panthers’ leader in sacks was linebacker Haason Reddick, who’s now on the Philadelphia Eagles. Reddick racked up 68 tackles and 11 sacks. Safety Jeremy Chinn led the Panthers with 107 tackles. Linebacker Shaq Thompson totaled 104 tackles and two interceptions. 

Last season, the Patriots’ offense ranked sixth in points (27.2), eighth in rushing yards (126.5), and 14th in passing yards (226.9). During his rookie campaign, Mac Jones passed for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Damien Harris anchored the rushing attack with 929 yards and 15 touchdowns. Rhamondre Stevenson added 606 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. 

Jakobi Meyers led the Patriots with 83 receptions and 866 yards. Tight end Hunter Henry finished with 603 receiving yards and a team-best nine touchdown receptions. Kendrick Bourne caught 55 receptions for 800 yards and five touchdowns. 

Defensively, the Patriots ranked second in points allowed (17.8). Linebacker Matthew Judon was tops on the Patriots with 12.5 sacks. Linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley totaled a team-high 109 tackles. Cornerback J.C. Jackson, who’s now on the Los Angeles Chargers, tallied a team-best eight interceptions. Safeties Adrian Phillips and Kyle Dugger each recorded four interceptions. 

The Patriots defeated the Panthers 32-29 in Super Bowl XXXVIII on Feb. 1, 2004. 

The Panthers finished with a 5-12 record and missed the playoffs last season. The Patriots posted a 10-7 mark and were routed by the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round. 

The Patriots are favored by three points against the Panthers. For the money line, it’s Panthers +125 and Patriots -155. The over/under is set for 40.5 points. 

Count on the under to hold. The Patriots will cover the spread and defeat the Panthers for their first win of the preseason.
