Canada legalized single-event wagers with the passage of C-218 in August 2021, and now, operators are looking to partner with national leagues to bring legal sports betting to the forefront of Canadian athletics and entertainment.

One such partnership has just been announced: the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation will be the official partner of the NFL. OLG runs the PROLINE+ sportsbook, which offers the full gamut of wagers (including single-event wagers, parlays, and more) to eligible users in Ontario.

This five-year partnership will include content shared across the OLG.ca and NFL digital platforms, unique events and promotions, and player deals to be announced further down the line as the partnership matures.

In tandem with this partnership, it was announced that the in-person PROLINE sportsbook and the online PROLINE+ platform would start accepting prop bets. Prop bets are sometimes considered novelty bets, and are “side bets” that don’t have to do with the outcome of the final game. Some examples of prop bets include:

  • First player to score a touchdown
  • First team to use coach’s challenge
  • Team MVP for the game

PROLINE+ is the only provider of sports betting in Ontario thus far. With the rollout of C-218, the first operators to be able to offer single-event wagering across the country were proprietary platforms established by provincial lotteries and gaming authorities (including some tribal authorities).

Ontario stands as one of the only areas in Canada that plans on expanding into the full commercial market. They’ll do this by offering sports betting licenses to eligible operators starting April 4th, 2022. For now, though, the OLG partnership with the NFL is just another way to promote safe, legal gambling to the Canadian market.

Gavin Kemp, director of corporate partnerships for the NFL had this to say about the agreement: “We look forward to working together to create new responsible and innovative ways for football fans to share in the action of the NFL.”

Users must be a resident of the province and at least 19 years old to use the PROLINE+ online sports betting platform.
