Best Ontario Sportsbooks

At the moment, only one sportsbook, PROLINE+, is licensed and offering singles in addition to parlays, totals, and other wagers you’d expect at a modern sportsbook. The above table lists operators that are expected to enter the Ontario market as soon as they can secure a license.

Additionally, there are some brands familiar to Canadians that are similarly likely to enter the Ontario market; we’ve gone into detail below.

theScore Bet

In a partnership with Penn National, parent company of brands like Barstool Sports, theScore Bet will be coming to the province!

Look forward to these two expert providers coming together to offer in-person and online sports betting all over Ontario, and eventually, hopefully, across Canada at large. There's also a possibility that theScore Bet will take over operations for Penn National's sports betting and iGaming platforms and rebrand the apps as such: we'll keep you updated on any changes as they occur.

Betway

Started in 2006, Betway is a global contender. Ontario sports betting benefits from the wide-ranging selection of sports and markets, as well as multiple bonus packages. Ontario sports betting apps include the Betway app, which is designed for purpose and functions smoothly.

Banking options with Betway are good, with Visa and Mastercard options as standard alongside the newer innovations like Paysafe and EcoCard. MuchBetter is the fastest withdrawal option, and all deposits are instant. This site is not yet licensed under Ontario’s new sports betting framework, but stay on the lookout for Ontario single-game sports betting through Betway

Ontario Betting Laws

Sports betting legislation in Ontario is fast moving, and Ontario is at the forefront of implementing Canada's new sports betting law province-wide. Now that Bill C-218 has legalized single-game sports betting as of Aug. 27, 2021, the province has moved forward with releasing more details on what the marketplace will look like as it matures.

Ontario alone is set to be one of the largest markets in North America, so officials from the AGCO are eager to offer as many licenses as possible.

The online sports betting market in the province is overseen by the iGaming Ontario commission, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The newly-minted commission has now established and published the full requirements for operators to enter the Ontario market, with license applications pending already. Important details about the AGCO's sports betting licenses include the following:

  • There will be no limit to the amount of licenses available in the province.
  • There will be no license requirement; even offshore operators will be eligible to apply for an online wagering license in Ontario.
  • The law will not provide for international liquidity; as a result, games that pool prize money from other countries or provinces (like poker or certain DFS platforms) will be unavailable.
  • Similar to Europe, Ontario's sports betting packages heavily restrict advertisements, and require stringent compliance measures to keep their games fair and responsible. As a result, promotional information on these platforms and their offers will be scarce.

The AGCO projects that licenses will be fully available to any interested parties by the end of 2021. These licenses will allow for sports betting as well as online casinos and event wagering, so expect to see a tidal wave of betting options for eligible, legal bettors in Ontario very soon. You may even be able to bet on awards shows, political events, esports, and more.
