ONTARIO BETTING LAWS

Sports betting legislation in Ontario is fast moving, and Ontario is at the forefront of implementing Canada's new sports betting law province-wide. Now that Bill C-218 has legalized single-game sports betting as of Aug. 27, 2021, the province has moved forward with issuing commercial betting licenses to the above providers.

Ontario alone is set to be one of the largest markets in North America since officials from the AGCO are eager to offer as many licenses as possible.

The online sports betting market in the province is overseen by the iGaming Ontario commission, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The newly-minted commission has established and published the full requirements for operators to enter the Ontario market, with license applications pending already. Important details about the AGCO's sports betting licenses include the following:

  • There will be no limit to the amount of licenses available in the province.
  • There will be no license requirement; even offshore operators will be eligible to apply for an online wagering license in Ontario.
  • The law will not provide for international liquidity; as a result, games that pool prize money from other countries or provinces (like poker or certain DFS platforms) will be unavailable.
  • Similar to Europe, Ontario's sports betting packages heavily restrict advertisements, and require stringent compliance measures to keep their games fair and responsible. As a result, promotional information on these platforms and their offers will be scarce.

The AGCO has already made licenses fully available to any interested parties, including offshore sportsbooks. These licenses are live as of April 4th, 2022, and allow for sports betting as well as online casinos and event wagering. Expect to see a tidal wave of betting options for eligible, legal bettors in Ontario begin to roll! You are able to bet on awards shows, political events, esports, and more.

AGCO CALLS FOR OPERATIONS HALT ON APRIL 4, 2022

In recent news, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced an important rule for the launch of the commercial sports betting market in the province: all operators that are applying for the expanded commercial license must cease operations or else jeopardize their ability to offer legal betting in Canada.

Essentially, this means that the market has experienced a reset: operators offering betting that have secured an iGaming license in Ontario (including PointsBet, theScore Bet, 888, and BetRivers) have shut down their existing sportsbooks and "re-launched" with their competitive platforms. This is to ensure that regulators can stay on top of any unregulated sportsbooks and likely shut down unlicensed platforms as the market re-launches with single event wagering.

BETTING IN CANADA

Eligible bettors can get online with PROLINE+ or a number of dedicated providers today. Operators must meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible bettors must be 19 or older.
  • Users must be residents of the province (or provinces) in which the sportsbook is licensed.

  • Eligible bettors cannot be members or employees of exempted organizations like sports teams, casinos, etc.

ONTARIO ONLINE SPORTS BETTING: EVENTS AND BETTING MARKETS

It’s unsurprising that hockey dominates the Ontario online sports betting lineup. The lion’s share of the Ontario sports betting world is NHL-focus, and Ontario betting sites have not been slow to notice. Therefore, anything NHL-related is fully represented.

But, this doesn’t mean other leagues are underrepresented by Ontario sportsbooks. Far from ignoring them, Ontario betting sites offer markets on all the leagues, including:

  • CFL
  • American sports like the NFL, NBA, and MLB
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • National sports like curling
  • International sports like cricket
  • Novelty bets like bets on awards shows

Are you still a beginner when it comes to betting on NHL or any other sport? Feel free to check out our page on How To Bet On Sports! Gather all the knowledge you need to get an edge on your bets.

NHL Betting

NHL BETTING IN ONTARIO

It’s a cliche, but hockey is indeed big business in Canada, pulling in more viewers than almost any other sport. As a result, NHL betting is heavily featured on Ontario’s betting websites, primarily PROLINE+ but soon to be featured on a veritable feast of available platforms. Of course, if you’re betting in Toronto, there’s one team you’re probably most interested in:

Toronto Maple Leafs Betting

The Leafs are always strong contenders for the Stanley Cup, and starting in 2021, users in Toronto and Ontario at large can bet on their favorite matches all the way up to the Cup Finals. If you’re looking for a solid platform to bet on the Leafs with, this is a good resource: as the market develops and more operators go live in Ontario, your choices of betting sites will get better.

MLB Betting

MLB BETTING IN ONTARIO

Though it’s a US league, the Blue Jays have a longstanding reputation in the MLB, having been a franchise since the late 80’s, having been an expo team since the late 1970’s. Now, they’re a well-established team in the league, with two World Series titles under their belt. You can absolutely bet on the MLB at legal and regulated sportsbooks in the US, including the Jays.

Toronto Blue Jays Betting

As the landscape changes regarding legal betting in Canada, we’re seeing a number of regulated sportsbooks offering bets on the Jays. If you’re looking to place bets on in-season, playoff, and finals MLB games including Blue Jays bets, there’s no better time than now.

NFL Betting

NFL BETTING IN ONTARIO

Just because it’s technically not a Canadian sport doesn’t mean Canada isn’t voracious for football- just the opposite. Canadians love watching and betting on CFL and NFL games, and it’s never been more possible than in 2021 now that single wagers are legal. Get online with PROLINE+ or other sportsbooks as they go live to bet on your favorite gridiron matchups.

NBA Betting

NBA BETTING IN ONTARIO

T-dot loves basketball, and fans all across the province are now able to access single game bets and sportsbooks offering a whole host of available leagues and markets, including bets on the Raptors.

The Raptors are starting to get their stride, securing a title win in 2019. The NBA preseason, starting in October is sure to test the Raptors as their reputation for a potential title winner is only getting stronger. We’re looking forward to placing legal bets on the Raptors in Ontario, and if you’re an eligible bettor in the province, now is a great time to get online with one of several dedicated platforms to bet.

When you are ready to cash out your winnings or add more funds to your account, there will be a few things you need to keep in mind:

The following methods are typically available for deposit:

We're hoping that more Canadian sportsbooks can add functionality for PayPal, Play+, or other common payment methods like seen in the US, as the market is constantly evolving.
