The San Francisco 49ers will take on the host Chicago Bears on Sunday in Week 1 of the NFL season. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET from Soldier Field. Coverage will be televised on FOX. 

The 49ers went 2-1 in the preseason. In their last preseason game, the Houston Texans blanked the visiting 49ers 17-0. The 49ers lost despite having more total yards and just one less first down. The Bears went a perfect 3-0 during the preseason. The Bears edged the host Cleveland Browns 21-20 in their preseason finale. Bears quarterback Justin Fields passed for three touchdowns in the first half.

Last season, the 49ers’ offense ranked seventh in rushing yards (127.4), 12th in passing yards (248.3), and 13th in points per game (25.1). Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Garoppolo is being supplanted by second-year quarterback Trey Lance in the starting lineup. Lance tallied 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions through the air in six games as a rookie. 

Versatile threat Deebo Samuel amassed team-highs in receptions (77), receiving yards (1,405) and receiving touchdowns (6). Samuel also rushed for 365 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns. 

Tight end George Kittle recorded 71 receptions, 910 yards, and six touchdowns. 

Defensively, the 49ers tied for 23rd in points per game allowed (21.5). Defensive end Nick Bosa finished with team highs in sacks (15.5) and tackles for loss (21). Linebacker Fred Warner led the 49ers with 137 tackles, including seven tackles for loss. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair had 102 tackles and nine tackles for loss. 

Last season, the Bears’ offense ranked 14th in rushing yards (118.7), 27th in points per game (18.3), and 30th in passing yards (188.6). During his rookie campaign, Fields passed for 1,870 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Fields also rushed for 420 yards and a pair of scores. Fields split time with veteran Andy Dalton, who is now on the New Orleans Saints. 

Darnell Mooney was the top receiver for the Bears, totaling 81 receptions, 1,055 yards, and four touchdowns. David Montgomery paced the Bears on the ground with 849 yards and seven touchdowns. 

Defensively, the Bears ranked 22nd in points per game allowed (23.9). Linebacker Roquan Smith paced the Bears with 163 tackles, while also having three sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Linebacker Robert Quinn was tops for the Bears with 18.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Linebacker Alec Ogletree, currently a free agent, totaled 87 tackles. 

Last season, the 49ers bounced back from six wins in 2020 to 10-7. The 49ers went on the road and defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round and the Green Bay Packers to advance to the NFC title game. The visiting 49ers lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

The Bears regressed with six victories last season after going 8-8 in 2020. The Bears finished third place in the NFC North. At the end of last season, the Bears fired head coach Matt Nagy and general  manager Ryan Pace. Former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is the current Bears coach. 

As of Sept. 8, Kittle (groin) is listed as questionable for the 49ers and wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (hamstring) is questionable for the Bears. 

The 49ers are favored by seven points against the Bears. For the money line, it’s 49ers -300 and Bears +245. The over/under is set for 40.5 points. 

The 49ers will kick off the season by covering the spread and earning a road victory.
