Betting on the Florida State Seminoles

Based in Tallahassee as the capital of Florida, this university has a long history of achievements on and off the basketball court. However, the one achievement on the minds of most Florida State fans is finally winning a national championship in basketball.

This program dates back to the mid-1950’s when the Seminoles played as an Independent. During that 20-year run, the team went to the national title game in 1972 where it lost to John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins.

Ahead of the 1976 season, Florida State became a member of the Metro Conference. After moving to the ACC in 1991, that season’s postseason run in the NCAA Tournament went to the regional semifinal, which is also known as the Sweet 16.

Making an early mark in its new conference, Florida State went to the regional final the following season as one of the top eight teams left in that year’s tournament.

That early success in the ACC led to an extended dry spell with just one NCAA Tournament appearance over the next 15 seasons. However, starting in 2008, Florida State began to establish itself as a national power in college basketball.

Over the past 13 basketball seasons, the Seminoles were a top four seed for the NCAA Tournament on five different occasions. The best tournament run during that same time frame was to the Elite 8 in 2018.

Leonard Hamilton’s long tenure as the team’s head coach began in the 2002/2003 season. Dave Cowens was one of the first Florida State basketball players to make his mark in the NBA. A few of the other most recognized players on that list include Bob Sura and Charlie Ward.

Playing in the ACC, natural rivalries in basketball have formed against Duke and North Carolina as the two most successful programs. An ongoing rivalry against Clemson spills over from football. Florida State’s biggest rivalry in the ACC overall is against the in-state Miami Hurricanes.

Point spreads and total lines remain the most popular way to wager on a Florida State basketball game.

  • FSU   -4.5
  • Duke +4.5

A bettor wagering on the Seminoles -4.5 needs them to win the game by 5 points or more to win their bet. On the other side, a bettor who wagered on Duke +4.5 can have the team lose by 4 points or less, and even win the game to collect their winnings.

Betting on the Florida State Seminoles in Florida

Betting on the Seminoles in Florida is currently illegal. The actual Seminole Tribe offered sports betting briefly in the fall of 2021 through an amended gaming compact. However, that whole situation continues to work itself through the courts due to legal challenges.

The only way to bet on Florida State is in states that allow legal sports betting on college sports.
