2021 Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview
The Virginia Tech Hokies won just five games last season, suffering a second losing season in the past three years. That isn’t something which has happened very often in Blacksburg in recent seasons. In fact, it didn’t happen at all from 1993-2017, mostly under the watch of legendary coach Frank Beamer. Justin Fuente took over for the 2016 season, mostly with Beamer’s recruits, and the Hokies won 10 games. That’s Fuente’s only double-digit campaign in five seasons at the helm. They have suffered three straight bowl losses, and the Hokies opted out of a bowl game in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Virginia Tech saw QB Hendon Hooker, a graduate transfer, move along to Tennessee for the 2021 season. That means the starting job under center will likely fall to Braxton Burmeister, who we saw in spurts last season. Those spurts weren’t terribly impressive, as he completed 48-of-84 passes for 687 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He completed just 57.1 percent of his pass attempts, and he also ran for 182 yards and two scores.

Virginia Tech Odds to win 2021 ACC Championship
The defense was a train wreck in 2020, and they lost three of its better players in LB Rayshard Ashby, S Divine Deablo and DL Jarrod Hewitt. Defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton is up against it, as he looks to cobble together a capable defense.
The schedule maker wasn’t terribly kind to the Hokies, either. Virginia Tech opens the season with North Carolina, a high-octane offensive unit not only with designs on winning the Coastal Division, but perhaps finding its way into the CFP playoff. At least the Hokies get UNC at Lane Stadium on a Friday night in the opener.
After a breather against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 11, it’s another difficult assignment at West Virginia on Sept. 18. The Hokies could very well be staring 1-2 in the face before its home game against FCS Richmond on Sept. 25 prior to their bye week.
The bad news is that Notre Dame comes to town on Oct. 9, but at least they’ll have two weeks to get healthy and prepare. The Hokies also face Pittsburgh and Syracuse in Blacksburg, capping off a four-game homestand which begins Sept. 25 and ends Oct. 23. Yes, they do not have to leave the great state of Virginia for a month. On Oct. 30, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech hook up in an interesting game, and the following week the Hokies have a short week with a trip to Boston College.
Virginia Tech faces Duke on Nov. 13, one home game in a five-game span to close out the regular season. That includes trips to Miami and Virginia to wrap the regular season.
The offense could make some noise this season, but the defense has to be markedly better, or this team will be struggling to go .500. I think this team loses to UNC, West Virginia and Notre Dame to start 2-3. They’ll lose one of the games at Georgia Tech and Boston College, and likely at home to Miami. The season total might come down to the finale at Virginia, a tough assignment on the road.
The chances of making a bowl game, let alone the ACC Championship game, are very small, at best.
Virginia Tech Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff
Save your money. The Hokies will have a difficult time simply becoming eligible for a lower-tier bowl. They're not championship timber.
Virginia Tech 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds
Braxton Burmeister +10000
The good news for Burmeister is that he will have plenty of capable and experienced targets with leading WR Tayvion Robinson back in the mix, as well as WR Tre Turner and TE James Mitchell. The trio were the top three receivers for Fuente’s Hokies, with Robinson going for team highs of 38 grabs and 592 yards with three scores. Turner had 34 catches for 529 yards and three scores, and both Robinson and Turner averaged 15.6 yards per reception. Mitchell is the top returning pass catcher, in terms of average per grab, going for 16.7 yards per reception. He also found the end zone a team-high four times in 2020. While he is expected to start under center, he is an extreme long shot for the Heisman.
