Kansas Jayhawks vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Predictions

Score Prediction - Coastal Carolina 45 Kansas 17

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns each were ranked in the Top 25 heading into the regular season, the first time two Sun Belt Conference teams were in the preseason rankings. Louisiana ended up getting roughed up in Texas, but Coastal Carolina was able to easily take care of business against FCS The Citadel, and they now sit alone in The Associated Press rankings at No. 17.

Kansas isn't ranked, and they're nowhere near consideration. You'd never know it from the reaction of its crowd last week. Kansas picked up a 17-14 come-from-behind victory against South Dakota of the FCS. When the dust settled, the crowd at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence spilled out onto the field as if the Jayhawks just rock chalked all over Oklahoma or Texas. You can't blame the Jayhawks fans, though. They were 0-9 SU/1-8 ATS last season, and it was their first victory since Oct. 26, 2019 against Texas Tech, so yeah, it's been a while to have a reason to party about Kansas Football. And hey, Kansas is undefeated, with a better record than heavyweights Clemson, Miami, North Carolina and Washington combined. So raise an Unfiltered Boulevard Wheat and salute the unbeaten Jayhawks!

The good times aren't expected to continue for KU on its visit to The Grand Strand. Coastal Carolina is heavily favored over its Power 5 visitors.

Last week, Kansas was outgained 262 to 247 in total yards, and they also lost the turnover battle with a minus-2 differential. So while they were able to win the game on the scoreboard, it was anything but a crisp win, and they were lucky to get it done. If they play like they did Saturday against the Coyotes, CCU is going to blow their doors off, and that's exactly what is expected Friday night.

Chanticleers star QB Grayson McCall threw for 262 yards and a touchdown while running for 24 yards. A huge performance from McCall wasn't needed, as the Chants were gobbling up huge chunks of real estate on the ground. RB Shermari Jones hit the century mark on the nose, going for 100 yards and two rushing scores. RB Reese White chimed in with 62 yards and two touchdowns, while RB Braydon Bennett posted 49 yards and a score. In total, the Chanticleers were good for 266 yards and five rushing scores, and an average of 8.6 yards per carry. Kansas allowed 164 yards on the ground to FCS South Dakota. That's a great sign that McCall will once again be likely to break a sweat, while the running backs do the heavy lifting.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Analysis

Both of these teams might have identical 1-0 records, but one team barely won, and the other wasn't tested. One team struggled in most facets of the game, while one had no such issues.

Coastal Carolina showed off its tremendous depth at the skill positions, albeit against an FCS opponent. Kansas showed that they're much closer to being an FCS-caliber team, as it barely scratched past a mediocre Coyotes team which isn't even the best in the state of South Dakota. Expect head coach Jamey Chadwell's team to come out and lay the wood to the Jayhawks. One game isn't a great sample size of what to expect, but you only need to look to last season for a better comparison. Kansas was 0-9 SU/1-8 ATS, while Coastal Carolina was 11-0 SU/8-2-1 ATS during the regular season, including a 38-23 win in Lawrence on Sept. 12, before losing in its bowl game.

There is not one area from offense, defense, special teams or coaching which has the arrow pointed in the favor of Kansas. If this was a basketball game, it's all Jayhawks. It's not, and this will be a rout, Chanticleer style.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have beaten the Kansas Jayhawks twice, both games in Lawrence with Coastal as the underdog. (AP)
