Not all golf courses are as “green” as they look.

In this study, Vegas Insider analysed 123 championship courses across the U.S. using satellite imagery from April 2026, measuring the exact colour of their fairways. Each course was compared to a “Perfect Green” benchmark, an RGB value of 70, 170, 70, which represents peak turf health and chlorophyll density.

We then calculated how close each course comes to that ideal, creating a Green Score out of 100. The closer the match, the higher the ranking.

The result is a data-driven leaderboard of America’s greenest golf courses, revealing where pristine conditions are pushed to the limit, and where courses lean into a more natural, less manicured look.

Key Findings

  • Firestone (South) ranks #1, scoring a perfect 100.00, the only course to match the “Perfect Green” benchmark.
  • Southern courses dominate the top spots, with Atlanta Athletic Club, Quail Hollow Club, and Reynolds Lake Oconee all ranking joint #2.
  • The top of the leaderboard is tightly packed, with multiple courses ranking inside the top 10 just one step from perfect green.
  • Links-style courses rank at the bottom, including Bandon Dunes (#118) and Shinnecock Hills (#114).
  • Sand Hills GC ranks last (#123), reflecting its natural, dry landscape rather than maintained turf.
  • The West shows the biggest contrast, from Riviera CC (top 10) to Pacific Dunes (#122).
  • Higher-ranked courses rely on more intensive upkeep, linking greener turf to greater maintenance demands.

The U.S. Majors

Masters Tournament
Augusta National GC ranks #33 with a Green Score of 91.83, placing it comfortably among the greener courses in the study. While it doesn’t sit right at the very top, its consistency reflects the tightly controlled conditions the Masters is known for.

PGA Championship
The PGA Championship is closely linked with some of the highest-ranked venues in the data. Quail Hollow Club (#4, 98.02) and Valhalla GC (#16, 96.57) both sit near the top, highlighting the tournament’s preference for pristine, tournament-ready setups.

U.S. Open
The U.S. Open shows the widest range. Courses like Congressional CC (#10, 96.57) rank highly, while others such as Shinnecock Hills (#114, 12.13) fall much lower, reflecting a deliberate shift toward firmer, more natural playing conditions rather than uniform “perfect green” presentation.

Expert Insight

“The best golf courses stand out because of how consistent and well-kept they feel from the first hole to the last. The greenest courses aren’t just naturally lush, they’re maintained to an incredibly high standard, where even the smallest details make a difference.”

“At the same time, some of the most iconic courses take a different approach, leaning into a more natural, rugged look instead.”

Final Takeaway

Firestone (South) sets the benchmark, becoming the only course to achieve a perfect green score. It leads a tightly packed group at the top, where several courses fall just one step below perfect, showing how small the margins are at elite level.

The rankings also reveal a clear regional pattern. Southern courses dominate the top 20, while links-style layouts such as Bandon Dunes and Shinnecock Hills rank much lower by design, favouring natural terrain over uniform turf.

Overall, the data shows that “greenness” is not just about how a course looks, but how it’s maintained, and what it’s designed to prioritise.

At the highest level, even the smallest differences in colour can separate the best from the rest, a reminder of how fine the margins are throughout the golf season, especially during the majors. Methodology

Data Collection
Vegas Insider analysed 123 championship golf courses across the United States using satellite imagery captured in April 2026. For each course, average colour values (RGB) were taken from three key landing zones to ensure consistency across playing areas.

Benchmark: “Perfect Green”
Each course was measured against a fixed benchmark of 70, 170, 70, representing peak chlorophyll levels in high-quality turfgrass. This value was used as the standard for ideal “green” conditions.

Distance from Perfect Green
We calculated how far each course’s colour profile deviates from the benchmark. The smaller the distance, the closer the course is to perfect green.

Green Score (0–100)
To create a clear ranking, all results were converted into a Green Score out of 100. The course closest to the benchmark received a score of 100, while the furthest scored 0.

Regional Breakdown
Courses were grouped into four regions — South, Midwest, Northeast, and West — to identify geographic trends in turf quality and maintenance.
