The hottest golfer in the world is Scottie Scheffler. He has now won four of his last six starts and took over the No. 1 spot in the overall rankings after claiming his first major on Sunday. Scheffler dominated the field at the Masters and won by three strokes to claim the green jacket and join golf’s most elite club. His recent play has led to Scheffler joining the list of favorites at the remaining majors.
Prior to his win on Sunday, Scottie Scheffler was 18-1 to win the PGA Championship next month. Scheffler has now dropped to 12-1 after his strong performance at Augusta National. On the other end of the spectrum, Viktor Hovland is no longer one of the favorites after a T27 at the Masters. We have yet to see Bryson DeChambeau’s odds drop, but that might be coming soon as he had a disastrous performance.
The other big winner at Augusta was Rory McIlroy. The former No. 1 golfer in the world has never won a Masters, but he finished runner-up to Scheffler after shooting a blistering 64 in the final round. McIlroy is coming on strong, and he has previously won each of the other three majors.
The odds for McIlroy and Scheffler to win the British Open have dropped significantly as a result of their play at the Masters. McIlroy was 14-1 and Scheffler was 22-1 before this week. We saw McIlroy finish T5, T4, T2 at this event from 2016 to 2018 after winning the 2014 British Open, but he has not played well at the last two tournaments. Meanwhile, Scheffler finished T8, T7, T8 at the last three majors last year, so he has the confidence needed to take on St. Andrews.
