At the Gate – Sunday

I did a better job handicapping than figuring out the forecast yesterday, but it ended up working out pretty well.

I thought Aqueduct might cancel on Saturday with up to three inches of snow in the forecast to start right around post time and the snow did come down hard for about an hour, but racing went on.

I went looking for warmer weather at Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds, and it paid off with five winners on top in the nine races that made up my Best Plays Report.

Among those was my top pick in the Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds, a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race. My top pick was Enforceable, who was 15-1 on the morning line.

Other saw what I did, and the colt was bet down to 7-1, getting the job done and returning $15.60. My second choice Silver State completed a $2 exacta that paid $72.60 and we also nailed the trifecta that paid $237.30 for $1.

Enforceable is trained by Mark Casse and the colt is a half-brother to 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner New Year’s Day and multiple stakes winner Mohaymen. This guy appears to have a bright future.

The weather looks better for the Big A today and we also will head out to Gulfstream Park looking to pad our bankroll.

My Best Plays Report for Sunday includes my eight strongest plays from Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Md Sp Wt (12:50 ET)
#4 Enough Love   8-1
#3 Doll   4-5
#5 Alphadora   3-1
#1 Midnight Banker   6-1

Analysis: Enough Love makes her second career start and first since her debut in Oct. of '18 where she checked in a non-threatening sixth while in the Rice barn. She lands with Falcone who has won with 3 of his last 9 (with a +ROI) bringing runners back off a +180-day layoff. The $65,000 Ocala purchase is by He's Had Enough out of a Not For Love mare that ash dropped one other runner, no winners to date. Decent looking works on the morning tab and not a real tough spot for her return off the bench.

Doll has been the beaten chalk in five of her six career starts, her last two settling for the runner up spots earnings numbers that should be good enough to beat this weak group. She owns solid early and mid pace numbers and looks tough here but with Servis calling the shots is sure to be under even money. She is out of a Dixieland Band mare that has dropped seven winners.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 9-2 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 5 Clm $32,000 (2:55 ET)
#2 California Night   5-1
#3 Direct Order   3-1
#1 Win With Pride   5-2
#4 Mad Munnys   8-1

Analysis: California Night cuts back from nine furlongs for his second start off the claim by the Cannizzo barn. Last out in the slop the five-year-old set the early fractions and weakened to finish fourth, catching a racing strip that was playing to outside stalkers and closers. Two back at this distance the stalked the early pace and finished gamely to miss by just a neck against $20,000 claimers. He looks well spotted here dropping in for a $32,000 and has beaten much tougher than these.

Direct Order beat Alw-1 optional claimers two back at Philly and then regressed at the same level last out when catching a sloppy track. He has won twice over the main track here in five trips, both against Alw-1 optional claimers. he makes his third start of his current form cycle for the Servis barn. He picks up the hot riding Lezcano and figures to bounce back with a much better effort in this spot.

GP Race 6 Md Sp Wt (2:32 ET)
#4 Tomorra   9-2
#8 Pearlescent   5-1
#7 Unforseen   4-1
#10 Declarationwarrior   6-1

Analysis: Tomorra drew a tough post in her debut where she was sent off at 26-1. She was outrun early and made a mild late run to finish fifth beaten 3 1/2 lengths in a decent effort. Three runners have come out of that race to win next out including the winner She's My Type, who won the Ginger Brew here on Jan. 4. This gal is out of the stakes winner Halo River ($107,535) who has dropped seven winners including three turf winners and a couple of stakes winners, top earner Catch a Glimpse ($1.8 million) who won eight times on grass. She draws better here and gets a jock upgrade to Irad.

Pearelescent makes her first start since her debut in July at the Spa for the Mott barn that is 11% winners with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff. The filly was sent off at 4-1 in her debut, stalking the early pace from mid pack and finishing evenly in a fourth-place finish. She is out of a Rock Hard Ten mare that ash dropped three winners and two have won on turf. Decent works over at Payson for her return.
