Sunday’s Horse Racing Picks and Odds from Gulfstream Park on Sunday March 29

I guess you could say I fought the Law and the Law won.

I thought we had a shot of beating Tiz the Law in yesterday’s $750,000 Florida Derby (G1). The colt was 6-5 on the morning line and after three scratches I thought he would end up even shorter.

Instead the colt simply toyed with his overmatched rivals, drawing off to win by 4 ¼ lengths and returned $4.80.

That effort sets him up perfectly to peak on the first Saturday of May, but the only problem with that is the Kentucky Derby going to be run until the first Saturday of September. Perhaps his trainer Barclay Tagg will point hm toward the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park, which has been shifted to Saturday May 2.

I thought Gouverneur Morris might be able to pull off the upset for trainer Todd Pletcher, but the colt was under a hard drive before he even turned into the stretch and came up short in a fourth finish.

The shocker was the runner up Shivaree, who was forwardly placed and hung around to finish second at odds of 80-1, completing a $2 exacta that paid $188.40.

Ete Indien set the early fractions but was no match for the winner and weakened to finish third, completing a $1 trifecta that returned $328.90.

I had a hunch that Saturday might be the last day of racing at Gulfstream Park, but we are good to go on Sunday, which is the closing day of the championship meeting. Racing continues with the spring/summer meting getting underway on Thursday.

Gulfstream Park has already drawn the entries for Thursday’s card, so it looks as if the track plans on continuing to race.

Among the other tracks still running are Tampa Bay Downs, Fonner Park, Will Rogers Downs, Los Alamitos, Remington Park and Oaklawn Park.

Horseplayers can stream all the horse racing action using the Watch TVG App. The horse betting company based in the U.S. is offering a risk free bet up to $300 for new players.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Md $16,000 (1:00 ET)
#8 Cookie Cove   8-1
#5 Cultivation   3-1
#10 Dat Hot Match   4-1
#6 Dancingwithjimmieb   7-2

Analysis: Cookie Cove was off a beat slow last out for this tag, raced mid pack and did not have enough punch in the stretch in a fifth-place finish while beaten 1 1/2 lengths. She was the beaten chalk in her three previous starts, two of those runner up finishes. She catches a weak spot here while picking up the seven-pound bug. With a better start she should be more forwardly placed here and looks capable of moving forward off her last. She is out of a Tiznow mare that has dropped three dirt winners, no turf winners. Will give her a look in an unappealing opener.

Cultivation exits the same race as our top pick where she saved ground, was stuck in behind foes, angled out and then back down to the rial in deep stretch to just miss by a nose. She makes her third start off the bench here for the Kassen barn. Her three previous outings were weak, and her price may end up lighter than her 3-1 morning line.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Oaklawn Park:

OP Race 4 Md $12,500 (3:08 CT)
#9 Clever Arch   10-1
#6 Heffington   3-1
#1 Azlynn's Dreamer   10-1
#10 Zanshoes   8-1

Analysis: Clever Arch caught a sloppy track last out in her local debut and second career start. She dueled for the early lead and faded to finish a well beaten seventh. She showed speed in her debut two back at Delta Downs against $20,000 foes going two turns in a 6 1/2 furlongs sprint before weakening to finish fourth. She owns solid early and mid pace numbers and worth another look here over a track that should be dry after being off yesterday. She is the first foal to race out of a Bluegrass Cat mare. Decent value here if she goes off near her 10-1 morning line.

Heffington is 0 for 14 but was claimed out of her last start by the Broberg barn that is 27% winners first off the claim. Last out here in the mud she was away last and came with a good late rally under a seven-pound bug to finish in the runner up spot. She gets blinkers added and a jock upgrade. She has landed in the bottom half of the exacta four times and make her third start off the break here.

GP Race 9 OClm $35,000N1X (5:11 ET)
#8 Angelia   9-5
#7 Navasha   5-2
#5 Slingin Sammy B   9-2
#1 Remarkable Soul   12-1

Analysis: Angelia makes her second start off a nine-month layoff here for the Pletcher barn. Last out off the bench at six furlongs the filly was off last and made a mild late run to finish third, beaten six lengths. She will appreciate the stretch out to a mile here for a barn that is 22% winners moving runners from sprint to route. She graduated going two turns here last February in her fourth career start. She has come back with good works and she does not need to move forward much off her last effort to pick up the win in this spot.

Navasha faces winner first eh first time here after a sharp maiden score last out here going a mile. The filly tracked the early pace and fined strongly to win by two lengths. The Clement barn has been hot the last couple of weeks here picking up another win in yesterday's opener. Her start two back was on turf and three back in the mud. She returns off a two-month break and looks capable of moving forward off her last outing. It's not a real tough spot for her first go against winners.
