Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers Betting Predictions

The Chicago White Sox enter this season as reigning AL Central champs and hope to take the next step this season. The White Sox replaced 2nd baseman Cesar Hernandez with veteran Josh Harrison and also added another big bat in their lineup by trading for Dodgers outfielder A.J Pollock. The addition of these players combined with their already talented lineup could make them one of the more dangerous teams in baseball. Right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolitto is expected to take the mound for the Sox after going 11-9 last season with an ERA 3.53.

The Tigers have been in a rebuild mode the past few years, but after finishing 77-85 last season they are looking to take the next step this year. Detroit made a couple key signings this offseason including shortstop Javier Baez from the New York Mets and starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez from the Boston Red Sox. The Tigers are one of the youngest teams in baseball, but have plenty of talent that should be able to compete with most teams. Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to get the opening day start. Rodriguez was 13-8 last season with an ERA of 4.74.

The White Sox expectations are quite high this season and I think they come through in their opening game against Detroit. The Addition of A.J Pollock can take this team to the next level and should be an exciting season for Sox fans. I also like the under 8.5 runs as the weather forecast is calling for winds up to 10-15 MPH as well as potential snow and rain.

Chicago White Sox Betting Analysis

Chicago finished last season with an ATS record of 81-85, going 42-41 at home and 39-44 on the road. The total went under in 83 of Chicago’s 166 games including 10 of their last 15 to end the season. The White Sox have struggled when playing in Detroit with a 1-4 SU record in their last five games played in Detroit.

The White Sox currently have the second-best odds to win the American League at +460, only the Bluejays have better odds at +450. Chicago’s lineup is filled with talented bats including Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, and newly added A.J Pollock. Unfortunately for Sox fans Tim Anderson will not be in the starting lineup as he is serving a two-game suspension from the end of last season. Chicago was 6th in the MLB last season with an average of 4.90 runs scored per game.

The right-hander Lucas Giolito is expected to get the start for Chicago. Giolito went 11-9 last season with an ERA of 3.53 and recorded 201 strikeouts in 178.2 innings of work. Giolito didn’t see much action in spring training, but did pitch 11.1 innings and had an ERA of 3.18 and recorded 13 strikeouts.

Detroit Tigers Betting Analysis

Detroit had an impressive ATS record of 93-68 last season, going 49-32 at home and 44-36 on the road. The total went under in 87 of Detroit’s 161 games played last season including seven of their last eight home games. The Tigers have seen recent success against Chicago with a 4-1 SU record in their last five games when playing at home against the White Sox.

Vegas has Detroit with the third best odds to win the AL Central at +600, listed behind Minnesota (+500) and the White Sox (-210). The Tigers expect Javier Baez to have an immediate impact on the lineup and another offseason addition Austin Meadows from the Tampa Bay Rays will give this lineup even more depth. The Tigers ranked 22nd in the MLB last season with an average of 4.30 runs scored per game.

Newly acquired Eduardo Rodriguez will take the mound for the Tigers. Rodriguez was 13-8 last season with an ERA of 4.74 and recorded 185 strikeouts in 157.2 innings pitched. During spring training, Rodriguez pitched 17.0 innings, had an ERA of 3.71, and recorded 19 strikeouts.

Probable Pitchers

  • CWS: Lucas Giolito - RHP (11-9, 3.53 ERA, 201 K, 1.10 WHIP)
  • DET: Eduardo Rodriguez - LHP (13-8, 4.74 ERA, 185 K, 1.39 WHIP)

Chicago White Sox vs. Detroit Tigers Betting Conclusion

The Young Tigers lineup should be able to give the White Sox a run for their money on opening day. The additions of Javier Baez and Austin Meadows really help this lineup, but could be a few games before they start making an impact for their new team. I think the White Sox end up winning a close one in Detroit and because of the messy forecast anticipated for game time, I also like the total to go under 8.5 runs.
