The Seattle Seahawks (1-2) and San Francisco 49ers (2-1) square off in a key matchup in the NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams, who face each other, are each 3-0, so somebody is going to go to 4-0. The Seahawks, especially, cannot afford to lose this game and fall three games back of first place after just four games. The 49ers would be in a little better shape, even with a loss, but a win would have them just one game back of the top spot.

Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers Predictions

The Seahawks started the season with a 28-16 win on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, and all was well. However, they blew a double-digit lead against the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, and eventually lost the home opener in overtime, and then they were pounded on the road against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. Suddenly, people are questioning things in Seattle, and wondering if this team is on a downward spiral.

The 49ers won a pair of road games against the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles to start the season, but it was a loss at home against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football which actually might have been their best performance. It was a great game in front of the home fans, and the Niners came up just short after a Mason Crosby game-winning field goal at the buzzer.

So we have two teams coming off losses, but one team is feeling better about itself. I think the 49ers right last week’s wrong, and getting it done in front of the home faithful. Seattle has trouble in the back end of the defense, and they’re going to have their hands full trying to contain the likes of Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel in the pass game.

Seattle Seahawks Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 1-2
  • ATS: 1-2
  • O/U: 1-2
  • ATS - Home: 0-1
  • ATS - Away: 1-1

Offense hasn’t been an issue for the Seahawks, as you might expect. QB Russell Wilson is still playing at a high level, and they have two elite downfield threats in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The Seahawks have rolled up 281.3 passing yards per game, and 25.0 PPG to rank 13th in the NFL. The run game has also been good, going for 107.7 yards per outing, although Chris Carson suffered an injury last Sunday in Minnesota and is a bit of a question mark heading in.

As mentioned, defense is the issue with this team. They’re allowing a dismal 440.3 total yards per game, which is dead-last in the NFL. That’s very uncharacteristic for a Seattle defense, and the team which gave us the Legion of Boom in the back end of the defense is getting routinely beaten down the field. Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins picked them apart last week, and if a marginal quarterback can go for 300-plus and multiple touchdowns, that’s a problem. They are going to need to bring in reinforcements, but that cannot be easily done at this juncture of the season.

Seattle has lost and failed to cover in each of the past two games, and they’re allowed 31.5 PPG across the past two contests.

San Francisco 49ers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 2-1
  • ATS: 1-2
  • O/U: 2-1
  • ATS - Home: 0-1
  • ATS - Away: 1-1

The 49ers have been a little marginal, statistically, on both offense and on defense. While their effort was good enough to get past a winless Detroit Lions team, and a subpar Philadelphia Eagles side, it wasn’t good enough to push past Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in a marquee game.

The 49ers have racked up 348.7 total yards per game to rank 19th in the NFL, and they’re 16th in both passing yards (243.7) and rushing yards (105.0) per game. The 49ers showed some struggles last week in the red zone, too, but head coach Kyle Shanahan mixed things up, going to rookie Trey Lance under center to run it in, and that decision bore immediate fruit with a touchdown. Lance has been successful in the brief time he has been in on designed packages.

The defense is also very marginal, allowing 370.3 total yards per game to rank 16th , and they’re also 16th in the league in passing yards allowed (248.0). They’re also 16th in the NFL with 24.7 PPG, right down the middle. They’re going to have their hands full against another strong passer in Wilson. All three games for San Francisco have been one-score games, and this one will be no different.

The San Francisco 49ers have lost four straight home games when playing as the favorites. (AP)

Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Conclusion

The Seahawks are going to limp into the Bay Area with an air of desperation, and that could be a very good thing for them. The offense will be able to get it done, but will the defense be able to shut anybody down?

I think the 49ers are going to move the ball well, like they did between the 20s last week against the Packers. They really bogged down in the red zone, but Lance is an exciting x-factor who can come in for gadget plays to keep opposing defenses on their toes. I don’t think the 49ers struggle as much in the red zone against this Seahawks pass defense, however. They’re really struggled badly, and they’re not going to improve overnight.

I think the 49ers scratch out another one-score win, dropping the Seahawks into the basement by two full games.
