Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals Predictions

The Panthers hit the road, and they will have a new starting quarterback this weekend. Well, they made a lot of quarterback news this week, but more on that in a minute. QB P.J. Walker makes the start this week, after QB Sam Darnold suffered a fractured scapula last week in a loss to the New England Patriots.

Darnold completed less than 50 percent of his passes for just 172 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions last week, including a pick-six by CB J.C. Jackson, so Panthers fans aren’t going to miss him much. Opposing bettors might miss him, though, as his bevy of miscues have led to a 1-5 ATS mark across the past six games for Carolina.

Oh, and on that other quarterback news, Carolina and 2015 MVP QB Cam Newton have reunited, if you haven’t heard by now. He is getting assimilated, and he could be an option to start as soon as Week 11 unless Walker really lights it up.

The Cardinals had no QB Kyler Murray (ankle) or WR DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring) last week in San Francisco. No problem, though, as the team showed off its depth in a 31-17 win. Both are officially listed as questionable for this week’s game, with Murray going through a limited practice

Friday in his first session of the week. Nuk didn’t practice at all. RB Chase Edmonds (ankle) suffered an ankle injury against the Niners, and he is out this week.

In addition to those injuries, speedy WR Rondale Moore is questionable with a neck/concussion, while OL Justin Pugh (calf) is also out. The good news is that WRs Christian Kirk (thumb) and A.J. Green (illness) made it through a full practice Friday and are off the injury report.

Carolina Panthers Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 4-5
  • ATS: 4-5
  • O/U: 2-7
  • ATS - Home: 2-3
  • ATS - Away: 2-2

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so owner David Tepper green-lighted a reunion with Newton in Charlotte. Carolina opened the season 3-0 SU/ATS, but are in freefall since Week 4 with a 1-5 SU/ATS across the past six outings.

UNDER bettors have enjoyed the skid, cashing in each of the past three. The UNDER is 7-2 overall for Carolina, too, tied with the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks for the most UNDER results in the league.

The Panthers offense has been flagging, posting just 318.7 total yards per game to rank 27th, while going for just 208.2 passing yards per game to rank 29th. They also have just 19.0 PPG, 26th in the league.

Arizona Cardinals Betting Analysis

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 8-1
  • ATS: 7-2
  • O/U: 4-5
  • ATS - Home: 2-2
  • ATS - Away: 5-0

The Cardinals have the best record in the NFL, and they persevered last week with QB Colt McCoy under center. It’s uncertain if Murray will be ready to go again, as he is a question mark, but the Cardinals proved that they can win outright, even if their field general is in street clothes.

The Arizona offense will be challenged by a good Carolina defense, which ranked second in the NFL in total yards per game allowed (293.1) and passing yards per game allowed (181.4). If the Panthers have an Achilles’ heel, it’s stopping the run, ranking 19th in the league. That’s good news for the likes of RBJames Conner, who will have the backfield touches mostly to himself with Edmonds out of the picture.

Arizona is 6-1 ATS across the past seven games overall, and 5-2 ATS in the past seven against teams with a losing record. Remember, however, the Cards are just 9-21 ATS in the past 30 as a home favorite. The UNDER is 4-1 in their past five at home, and 4-0 in the past four as a favorite, too.

The Arizona Cardinals have won eight of their last nine games. (AP)

Carolina Panthers vs. Arizona Cardinals Betting Conclusion

With Walker under center for the Panthers, it will be a slow go for the Carolina offense. We might see a lot of RPO, and a ground-based attack for the Panthers, ragging the clock, trying to keep the ball away from the explosive Arizona offense. Of course, who knows who will be under center for the Cards. It could be McCoy again. While he helped the Cards drop 31 on the Niners last week, they won’t be able to operate with reckless abandon against one of the NFL’s best defensive units.

I think if Arizona was fully whole, they mop the floor with Carolina. But remember, the Panthers also welcomed RB Christian McCaffrey back from injury, and he will help the Panthers hang in there both with his feet, and his soft hands out of the backfield. I think we get a lower scoring game with plenty of highlights from the defense.
