EDMONTON OILERS vs. LOS ANGELES KINGS PREDICTIONS

The Oilers fell on home ice in a pivotal Game 5, blowing a chance to take a 3-2 series lead. Instead, it's the Kings with the 3-2 series lead, and a chance to eliminate the Oilers in SoCal on Thursday night. Edmonton picked up an 8-2 win in Game 3 in Los Angeles to go up 2-1, but squandered the lead, and now have its back against the wall.

To make matters worse, rearguard Darnell Nurse was suspended for one game by the NHL for a head-butt in Game 5, so the Oilers will have to tread on without one of their better defensemen and their sandpaper.

We finally had a close game, the first since Game 1, with the overtime game in Edmonton in Game 5. The previous three outings were decided by four or more goals, which was very uncharacteristic for the playoffs. The OVER and UNDER has alternated in this series, with the OVER hitting in odd-numbered games, and the UNDER hitting in even-numbered contests. That's rather circumstantial, however, and isn't something to base your wagers on.

This one should be a lower-scoring game, as Edmonton will want to be very careful, and L.A. will have a lot of pressure to win it in front of the home folks, or go back to chilly Edmonton for a decisive Game 7. The guys in black and silver certainly do not want that.

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 51-29-7
  • ATS: 41-46
  • O/U: 45-39-3

The Oilers really blew a chance to seize control of this series, and now face elimination on the road in Game 6. That's pretty amazing considering the fact they're playing without their top defense in Drew Doughty due to a season-ending injury, and the offense has been rather moribund. The leading scorers for the Kings are Phillip Danault, Adrian Kempe (OT GWG in Game 5) and Trevor Moore, each with five total points in the postseason. That's not exactly a who's who, with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid on the other side.

The Oilers are 8-3 in the past 11 games as a road favorite, so perhaps playing away from home is good for them. Edmonton is just 2-9 in the past 11 playoff games when favored, so perhaps it's not a great situation, though.

For totals, the Oilers have cashed the OVER in 18 of the past 24 games when favorites, including 5-2 in the past seven as a favorite in the playoffs. However, the UNDER is 6-2 in the past eight on the road.

LOS ANGELES KINGS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 47-29-11
  • ATS: 53-34
  • O/U: 38-46-3

The Kings have really enjoyed a little home cooking, sans for the Game 3 loss by an 8-2 score. They're 4-1 in the past five games at Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center), while going 8-3 in the past 11 games overall. They are just 3-7 in the past 10 as an underdog, however, 7-20 in the past 27 as a home 'dog and 3-8 in the previous 11 Western Conference Quarterfinals tilts.

The Kings have been doing it with mirrors, as they have no true superstars, but a bunch of lunch-pail games outperforming some of the league's brightest stars.

On totals, the UNDER is 7-3-1 in the past 11 playoff games as an underdog, while going 5-1-1 in the past seven games at home, and 5-1 in the previous six as a home 'dog.

EDMONTON OILERS vs. LOS ANGELES KINGS CONCLUSION

The Oilers have won one in two road games so far, and they'll need to do it again if they hope to avoid the handshake line in Southern California. Edmonton must win both in Game 6 and Game 7 to stave off the upstart Kings. It's not unfathomable, but the Oilers have really put themselves in a terrible position with the Game 5 overtime loss on home ice.

I am feeling the Kings. They're not the most talented, they're not the best defensive team, and Jonathan Quick is a goaltender who has seen better days. But Los Angeles has really come together nicely during this series, and I feel they're going to get it done against the more talented Oilers team. Sometimes, talent alone doesn't always win, but cohesiveness and taking advantage of opportunities will get you through.
