COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. ST. LOUIS BLUES PREDICTIONS

After a pair of home losses, the Blues headed for an elimination game in Denver Wednesday night, down 3-1 in the series. Late into the second period, the Avalanche held a 3-0 lead, courtesy of two Nathan MacKinnon goals, and a marker by Gabriel Landeskog. After mostly being quiet for most of the series, the big dogs of the Avs came to play, and looked to finish the Blues early. Vladimir Tarasenko notched a goal late in the second to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the final 20.

Robert Thomas made things interesting at 9:57 of the third, slicing the lead to 3-2, and Jordan Kyrou found the back of the net from Alexei Toropchenko and Justin Faulk to knot the game 3-3. However, just two minutes later, the hats were flying, as MacKinnon scored on a great individual effort to send the home crowd into a frenzy, singing, celebrating, and appearing to have sent the Blues to the handshake line.

But, like Lee Corso has been known to say, "Not so fast, my friend". Thomas scored his second of the period with an extra attack with just under 56 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Then, Tyler Bozak scored his second-ever overtime winner in the postseason at 3:38 of the extra session, extending the season for the Blues by at least one game. Now we'll see if the Blues can build on the momentum of the tremendous comeback.

COLORADO AVALANCHE BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 63-20-8
  • ATS: 44-47
  • O/U: 48-38-5

The Avalanche are a perfect 4-0 on the road so far during the postseason, winning Games 3 and 4 in Nashville in the first round to complete the sweep. The Avs also won Games 3 and 4 in this series, but have blown the past two games on home ice in Games 2 and 5. Yes, the road team has won four straight games in this series, so can Colorado continue that trend?

The Avalanche are also 51-19 in the past 70 games overall, and 7-2 in the past nine playoff games as a favorite. However, both of those non-covers have come in their past two home games, including Wednesday's colossal collapse. The Avs are 9-19 in the past 28 Conference Semifinal Round games, too, which is a huge reason they haven't been to the Western Conference Finals since 2002.

For totals, it's all OVER all the time for the Avalanche. The OVER is 5-2 in the past seven games overall, while going 4-0 in the past four on the road. The OVER is also 8-3 in the past 11 games as favorite, including 5-2 in the past seven playoff games when favored.

ST. LOUIS BLUES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 55-26-12
  • ATS: 54-39
  • O/U: 49-39-5

The Blues showed a lot of fortitude by staving off elimination in Denver, a place the Avalanche just do not lose very often. But, if any team can do it, the Blues can. They have been a thorn in the side of the Avalanche over the years.

St. Louis has rattled off 18 victories in the past 26 games overall, while going 2-5 in the past seven as a home 'dog. They're also 2-5 in the past seven at home, including losses in both home outings in this series, so now is as good a team as ever to turn that ugly trend around. However, despite the big win in Game 5, St. Louis is still 4-10 in the past 14 playoff games as a 'dog.

In terms of totals, the OVER is 25-11-1 in the past 37 games overall for the Blues, while going 7-3 in the past 10 at home. The OVER is 24-8-2 in the past 34 as a home underdog, too, while going 8-3 in the past 11 games on a day of rest.

COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. ST. LOUIS BLUES BETTING CONCLUSION

The lean here is to the Avalanche, based upon their performance in both Games 3 and 4 on the road in St. Louis. But you can't help but marvel at the big comeback of the Blues in Denver, down 3-0 with their backs against the wall. They have to be able to tap into that momentum and build on it in Game 6, right? A lot of hockey fans would love to see a Game 7 back in Denver, and the Blues are certainly positioned well to make that happen.

However, I think the loss on home ice serves as a wake-up call. Despite allowing the five goals, Darcy Kuemper didn't play poorly in Game 5, and the Avalanche certainly have the weapons to make life tough on Ville Husso and the home side. Look for another close game, with the Avalanche eking out a victory in St. Louis to send the proud and pesky Blues out of the playoffs.
