England vs. Germany Picks & Predictions

This game could well go to extra time and penalties, which is why I fancy the Germans at the prices. England have a bad tendency to fade in matches, and Gareth Southgate’s in-game management is often suspect. Germany are not the force they were in 2014, but they have all the experience in tournament knockouts as well as a long-standing hoodoo over England. Their midfield is a cut above England’s, and if they can dominate the ball they can wear England down and win the tie.

Betting Odds - England vs. Germany

Bookmakers rate these sides incredibly closely. Were this played on a neutral ground Germany would be the narrowest of favorites, but England are the slightly shorter price to win the game at 6/4 with Germany 19/10. The draw is 9/4. Germany are 19/20 to qualify with England 4/5. Over 2.5 goals is 11/10 with under 2.5 8/11.

England Betting Outlook

England won Group D with seven points but they only managed two goals in those games, both thanks to Raheem Sterling. Their displays against Croatia and Czech Republic were good enough but they were heavily criticized for their performance in a 0-0 draw with old rivals Scotland.

They conceded few chances in their three games and home advantage could be key on Tuesday night. Wembley’s capacity has more than doubled for this match and it is a fixture that matters hugely to English supporters. They will probably switch to a 3-4-3 formation to match the Germans.

Germany Betting Outlook

Germany had a roller-coaster ride in the group matches, all of which were played at home in Munich. They went down 1-0 to France before impressively demolishing Portugal 4-2 in what was probably the game of the tournament so far. But they were almost stunned by Hungary in their final game, needing a late Leon Goretzka strike to draw 2-2 and qualify in second.

Their late switch to a 3-4-3 worked superbly against Portugal, however, with Robin Gosens fantastic on the left. Their build up play still looks slow against packed defensive units, but Kai Havertz has been a real stand-out so far up front. For a first goal scorer, Havertz is the man to look at at odds of 15/2.
