Manchester City UCL Favorites

WILL THIS FINALLY BE THE YEAR THAT MANCHESTER CITY WINS THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?

This is a familiar position for Manchester City. The team that has dominated English football with five Premier League titles over the last decade is still searching for its first Champions League title. Manchester City have consistently been one of the favorites to win Europe’s highest honor, but they have always come up short and only made their first final last year. The Citizens were the most dominant team in the first leg of the Round of 16, yet there will be a healthy amount of skepticism until they actually lift a Champions League trophy.

Manchester City hammered Sporting CP 5-0 in Lisbon a few weeks ago. There is no doubt they will advance to the quarterfinals, and that is where they have had trouble in recent years. Prior to City’s trip to the finals last year, they had been eliminated by Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Lyon in the quarterfinals in the previous three seasons. Pep Guardiola’s side has incredible talent and depth at every position, so this might be the year that Manchester City finally break through.

Liverpool are in great position to make a deep run into the Champions League too. The Reds went on the road and beat Inter Milan 2-0 in the first leg of the Round of 16, and they have been the second-best team in England all season. They are the most successful English team in the history of this competition by a mile, and Jurgen Klopp’s tactical brilliance will always make Liverpool a tough out when he has talent like Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

Another team that has been snake-bitten in the Champions League has the best value to be Europe’s top team this season. Paris Saint-Germain have dominated French football over the last decade. PSG made a huge splash when they added Lionel Messi to pair with Neymar up top, giving this club one of the most terrifying attacks in the world.

PSG would be one of the overall favorites if they weren’t drawn against Real Madrid in the Round of 16, but they knocked off the most successful team in European history 1-0 a few weeks ago. It’s a little risky to back PSG now since there is a serious chance they could be knocked out by Real Madrid on Wednesday, but they will see their odds drop significantly provided they advance.
