In perhaps the most intriguing storyline of Week 1, Russell Wilson will ride the Denver Broncos into Seattle against the Seahawks on Monday Night Football for his first game against his old team. Kickoff off is slated for 8:15 p.m. ET from Lumen Field. Coverage will be nationally televised on ESPN/ABC.

The likely eventual first ballot Hall of Famer Wilson spent his entire 10-year career with the Seahawks before being traded to the Broncos this offseason. Wilson agreed to a five-year, $245 million contract extension with the Broncos. The Super Bowl champion quarterback has reached the Pro Bowl nine times and while also being tops in the NFL in passer rating (2015) and touchdown passes (2017). The 33-year-old signal caller is the Seahawks’ all-time leader in passing yards (37,059) and touchdown passes (292).

The Broncos went 2-1 in the preseason. The Broncos beat the visiting Minnesota Vikings 23-13 in their last preseason contest. All of the touchdowns for both teams came in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Broncos put the game away with a pair of field goals by Brandon McManus

The Seahawks were a winless 0-3 during preseason play. The Cowboys edged the visiting Seahawks 27-26 in the preseason finale. Ben DiNucci found Peyton Hendershot for the game-winning 14-yard touchdown with 4:07 left. The Seahawks announced after the loss that Geno Smith earned the starting quarterback job over Drew Lock.

The veteran journeyman Smith hasn’t played double-digit games in a season since 14 appearances with the New York Jets in 2014. Smith’s most passing yards (3,046) occurred during his rookie campaign in 2013. For his career, Smith has passed for 6,917 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions.

Last season, the Broncos’ offense ranked 13th in rushing yards (119.1), 19th in passing yards (211.4), and tied for 23rd in points per game (19.7). Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, now on the Miami Dolphins, led the Broncos in passing yards (3,052) and passing touchdowns (18), while throwing seven interceptions. Lock, included in the deal for Wilson, passed for 787 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in six appearances last season.

Melvin Gordon III (918 yards, eight touchdowns) and Javonte Williams (903 yards, four touchdowns) split the rushing load with exactly 203 carries apiece. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton recorded 58 receptions for a team-high 776 yards. Tim Patrick finished second on the Broncos with 734 receiving yards and led the team with five receiving touchdowns.

Defensively, the Broncos ranked third in the league in points per game allowed (18.9) last season. Safety Justin Simmons (five) and cornerback Pat Surtain II (four) combined for nine of the Broncos’ 13 interceptions. Defensive end Dre’Mont Jones was tops on the Broncos with 5.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Last season, the Seahawks’ offense ranked 11th in rushing yards (122.0), 16th in points per game (23.2), and 23rd in passing yards (201.9). In his final season with the Broncos, Wilson passed for 3,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Tyler Lockett (73 receptions, 1,175 yards, eight touchdowns) and DK Metcalf (75 receptions, 967 yards, 12 touchdowns) were the top receivers for the Seahawks last season. Rashaad Penny paced the Seahawks with 749 yards and six scores on the ground.

Defensively, the Seahawks tied for 21st in the league in points per game allowed (21.5). Quandre Diggs was tops for the Seahawks in interceptions (five) along with having 94 tackles. Jordan Brooks racked up a team-best 184 tackles. Carlos Dunlap, now on the Kansas City Chiefs, had a team-high 8.5 sacks.

The Broncos are favored by 6.5 points against the Seahawks. For the money line, it’s Broncos -280 and Seahawks +225. The over/under is set for 44 points.

With Wilson probably highly motivated, count on the over, as well as the Broncos covering the spread and getting the primetime road victory in the season opener.
