The Phillies and Marlins are third and fourth respectively in the NL East. Prior to the action on Aug. 9, the Phillies were in the second Wild Card spot, three games back of the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves

Before the game on Aug. 9, the Marlins are 2-3 in their last five games. In their last series, they dropped two out of three from the host Chicago Cubs. The Marlins blanked the Cubs 3-0 in the final game of the series after combining for one total run in the first two games. 

Prior to the contest on Aug. 9, the Phillies were 5-0 in their last five contests. The Phillies most recently swept a four-game set from the division rival Washington Nationals. The Phillies erupted for 36 runs in the series against the Nationals. 

Alcantara has allowed 108 hits, eight home runs, and 40 walks along with throwing 141 strikeouts in 158.1 innings. Alcantara ranks second in the MLB in ERA and fifth in WHIP (0.93). In Alcantara’s last game vs. the Reds on Aug. 3, he pitched a complete game shutout with only five hits allowed and one walk. 

The Phillies traded for Syndergaard from the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 2. Syndergaard has given up 86 hits, nine home runs, and 22 walks plus has thrown 66 strikeouts in 85 innings. In his first appearance as a member of the Phillies, Syndergaard gave up four earned runs and 11 hits in five innings. 

Prior to the games on Aug. 9, the Marlins ranked 21st in home runs (100), 23rd in batting average (.236), 26th in on-base percentage (.299) and 27th in slugging percentage (.371) and RBI (392). First baseman Garrett Cooper leads the Marlins in batting average (.274), and on-base percentage (.343). Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is on the injured list, is tops on the Marlins in home runs (14) and RBI (45). First baseman Jesus Aguilar has a team-best 89 hits. 

Before the contests on Aug. 9, the Phillies ranked fifth in slugging percentage (.424),  RBI (496) and home runs (146), 10th in batting average (.250) and 15th in on-base percentage (.314). Third baseman Alec Bohm leads the Phillies in batting average (.293) and hits (110). Left fielder Kyle Schwarber is tops on the Phillies in home runs (34) and RBI (67). First baseman Rhys Hoskins has a team-best .344 on-base percentage. 

Prior to the game on Aug. 9, the Marlins were 48-60 against the spread overall and 29-28 against the spread on the road. For over/under, the Marlins are 50-55-3 overall and 24-31-2 on the road. 

Before the contest on Aug. 9, the Phillies were 56-52 against the spread overall and 27-28 against the spread at home. In terms of over/under, the Phillies are 55-48-5 overall and 26-24-5 at home.
