The Sports Betting National Championship (SBNC) is back on the board at DraftKings Sportsbook. This annual peer-to-peer sports betting event is the ultimate test of handicapping skills. The leagues covered in this year’s competition include college football, the NFL and NBA.

SBNC IN NEW JERSEY
This year’s DraftKings’ Sports Betting National Championship will be held from Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7.
Adding to the excitement of this year’s SBNC is the fact that it will be held live in New Jersey. The venue is the Envue Hotel in Weehawken, just outside NYC.
Entrants can compete in-person at the event venue and hang out in the VIP Sportsbook lounge. They can also compete online in New Jersey and any other eligible states. The full list of eligible states is yet to be determined, although PA. is likely to be included.
All bets will be placed over the course of the three days. As mentioned, eligible leagues include CFB, NFL and NBA. The contest concludes on Sunday following the late afternoon NFL games.
SNBC TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
The structure of this tournament is rather basic in its makeup. Over the course of three days, contestants can bet on college football, NFL and NBA games through DraftKings sportsbook.
The total betting bankroll for the three-day contest is $5,000. The leaderboard is determined by total winnings. Each contestant must wager at least $1000 over the course of the competition to be eligible for leaderboard payouts.
Payouts range from $1 million for the grand prize to $10,000 for 21st to 25th place on the leaderboard.
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE SBNC
There is a simple three-step process to sign up for the SBNC as follows:
- Using the email address champseries@draftkings.com, contestants can express their interest in participating.
- Once deemed eligible, there is a $10,000 buy-in that must be paid in advance. Out of that fund, $5000 goes towards total prize money. The other $5000 is used as the weekend’s betting bankroll.
- Contestants can participate in person at the Envue Hotel in Weehawken, just outside NYC. They can also participate online in New Jersey via the DraftKings’ mobile app.
Other states such as PA may be added to the list of eligible online markets. Contestants can also gain entry into the SBNC as follows:
- DFS Qualifiers: winning a daily fantasy sports qualifying event.

WHAT IS THE CONSOLATION PRIZE FOR THE SBNC?
Consolations prizes award cash to contestants in fourth place through 25th place. This is based on the final leaderboard at the end of the competition. These prizes range from $100,000 for fourth place to $10,000 covering 21st to 25th place.

HISTORY OF THE SPORTS BETTING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The original SBNC took place in January of 2019. The contest was held in New Jersey with all bets placed through the DraftKings mobile sportsbook app.
The rules for that first contest were basically the same. Each contestant used a $5000 bankroll to place their bets on games. The leaderboard kept a tally of each day’s results. The total prize pool for that initial SBNC competition was $2.5 million.
The big difference in that first event was Sunday’s competition. Since it was held in January, the only two games on the board were NFL playoffs.
Moving the 2021 SBNC to November solved that issue to keep the final day much more competitive.
DraftKings acknowledged that there were some uncontrollable issues in that first competition. Most notable was the grading of the first NFL game bet in relation to the start of the second game. This turned out to be a learning experience that was later built upon in newer versions of DraftKings' sports handicapping contests.
HOW HAS THE SBNC IMPROVED?
The overall improvement of the SBNC can be attributed to the lessons learned in that initial competition. Legal sports betting in the US through mobile betting apps is still a relatively new technology that only dates back to late 2018.
Ever since the DraftKings mobile sportsbook app was first released, it has been a work in progress. As a result of that progress, this is the second-biggest sportsbook in the US based on overall market share.
A few of the tangible improvements to the SBNC process include:
- Faster grading and payouts on bets placed.
- The current version of the SBNC has been designed to build even more excitement over the three days. Most of the big money is won on Sunday’s wagers.
