College Basketball Best Bets | Expert Picks for Thursday, Feb. 22

Sam Houston State vs New Mexico State

by Kevin Rogers

Sam Houston State begins Thursday's action tied atop Conference USA with Louisiana Tech at 8-3.

The Bearkats head to New Mexico State tonight as the Aggies look to snap a three-game losing streak.

All three of those losses came away from Las Cruces, as New Mexico State is 5-0 at home in conference play and 0-6 on the road.

In the first matchup against Sam Houston State, the Aggies lost 79-67 as New Mexico State made only 4-of-20 three-point attempts.

Sam Houston has lost its last two road games at FIU and Jacksonville State, two teams that are in the bottom half of Conference USA.

Look for the Aggies to keep up their home dominance tonight as an underdog against the Bearkats.

Pick: New Mexico State +1 (-110)

Rutgers vs Purdue

Rutgers Scarlet Knights +15.5 (-108)

Rutgers (14-11 straight up, 12-13 against the spread) has won four of its last five games, including road wins at Michigan (69-59 as a 4.5-point road underdog) and at Maryland (56-53 as a 7.5-point road underdog).

The Scarlet Knights are 5-3 SU and 7-0-1 ATS in the last eight head-to-head meetings between these Big Ten rivals.

Their three losses to the Boilermakers have been by margins of 8, 5 and 12 points that would be spread covers with this number we're looking at tonight. Rutgers won outright at Purdue last season as an 8.5-point road underdog.

Purdue is mired in a 2-4 ATS slump in its last six games, winning only one those six recent contests by a double-digit margin.

One of the main reasons for RU's recent success against Purdue is the presence of 'Big' Cliff Omoruyi, who might be the nation's best defender. He averages 3.3 blocked shots per game and makes Zach Edey work for everything he gets in the paint.
