College Basketball Best Bets | Expert Picks for Wednesday, Feb. 21

Charlotte vs Memphis

by Kevin Rogers

Memphis put together a solid non-conference run which included wins over Clemson, Texas A&M, and Virginia. The Tigers started AAC play at 4-0 before losing six of their last nine conference games.

Charlotte travels to Memphis tonight as the 49ers have posted an impressive 11-2 record in the AAC, while sitting one game behind USF for first place.

The last three wins for the 49ers came against Temple, UTSA, and Wichita State, all teams that own 2-11 records in conference play.

Memphis has struggled to cover numbers in league action and is returning home off consecutive losses at SMU and North Texas.

This is rough stretch towards the end for Memphis with two games against FAU along with a home contest against UAB ahead.

Charlotte by no means is a push-over, especially sitting in 2nd place of the conference. But this is a big spot for Memphis to bounce back, who is sitting at its shortest home favorite spot in AAC play.

Pick: Memphis -5.5 (-110)

George Washington vs Saint Joseph's

Saint Joseph's Hawks -11.5 (-110)

St. Joseph's will play as a healthy favorite at home Wednesday night coming off back-to-back losses to slide below .500 in A-10 play.

The Hawks have won four of the past five home games in conference play including quality wins over Duquesne and George Mason while the only loss came to A-10 leader Dayton.

Narrow wins fill the win column for the Hawks, but this should be one of the most favorable matchups of the season as St. Joseph's is one of the best offensive teams in the conference and George Washington has the worst rated defense in the A-10.

The Revolutionaries were once 3-1 in A-10 play with three wins against good teams. George Washington has dropped eight games straight and few of those contests have been competitive with an average margin of defeat of nearly 16 points per game. That includes four home games and games vs. several teams that grade as lesser squads than St. Joseph's.

Having Garrett Johnson miss two recent games hasn't helped as the often size-edge for the Revolutionaries has been eliminated. The main issue for Chris Caputo's team has been the defense not being able to sustain 40 minutes playing at the fastest tempo in the conference.

The offense has poor shooting numbers and while turnovers have been kept in check, across the board this has been one of the worst defensive teams in the A-10.

St. Joseph's won both meetings last season including a 12-point home win and the Hawks have won S/U in three of the past four home meetings.

The only true road win of the season for George Washington came in early January by two points in a game where they shot 22 percent better than their season average from 3-point range and had a 21-11 edge in made free throws.
