UCONN HUSKIES VS. ST. JOHN'S RED STORM PREDICTIONS

The St. John’s Red Storm are coming off a 69-75 home loss to the Villanova Wildcats this past Tuesday. Prior to Tuesday’s loss, St. Johns had won back-to-back road games against Butler and Georgetown. The Red Storm have been extremely efficient scoring the ball, averaging 79 PPG, but the defense needs improvement. St. Johns is currently eighth in the Big East with a 5-7 conference record.

The 24th ranked UConn Huskies lost this past Thursday 68-74 to the Xavier Musketeers and have now dropped three of their last four games. Sunday’s matchup will be the fourth game in nine days played by the Huskies. UConn has done a good job of spreading the ball around, with five guys scoring double digits in eight games this season. The Huskies are currently fourth in the Big East with a 7-5 conference record.

The last time these two teams met was on January 12th, a game that went to overtime and ended with UConn winning 86-78. St. Johns has defeated UConn in four of the last six matchups including three straight at Madison Square Garden. This should be a close game just like the first meeting was between these teams. With this being UConn’s fourth game in nine days and St. Johns having not played since Tuesday, I like St. Johns and the points in this one.

UCONN HUSKIES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 16-7
  • ATS: 11-12
  • O/U: 16-7

UConn has gone just under .500 ATS with an 11-12 record. The Huskies are 1-4 ATS in their last five matchups and are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six games against St. Johns. The total has gone over in nine of UConn’s last 11 games and 16 times overall on the season. Going against this trend, the total has gone under in four of the last five games when playing St. Johns on the road.

UConn’s offense has been a balanced attack throughout the season, with plenty of guys who can score the ball. Entering Sunday’s game, the Huskies are averaging 77.6 PPG (43rd), 14.4 APG (92nd), 43.7 FG% (206th), 35.2 3PT% (111th), and 41 RPG (8th). Within Big East play, UConn has the top-scoring trio with R.J Cole (16.3 PPG), Adama Sanogo (15.2 PPG), and Tyrese Martin (13.7 PPG). These guys should get plenty of scoring opportunities as the Red Storm have been allowing 74.3 PPG.

Even when the offense is not producing, UConn’s defense allows them to hang around in games with six of their seven losses being decided by six points or less. On the season they are allowing 65.5 PPG (78th), 39.8 FG% (28th), 34.5 3PT% (229th), while averaging 6.9 SPG (152nd), and 6.5 BPG (2nd). This matchup will require an all-around defensive effort with St. Johns averaging 79 PPG and spreading the ball around with an average of 18 APG.

ST. JOHN'S RED STORM BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 13-10
  • ATS: 10-12-1
  • O/U: 13-8-2

Saint Johns has not been profitable ATS this season with a 10-12-1 ATS record. They have seen more success recently going 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games. The total has gone over 13 times for the Red Storm this season and has gone over in their last three games. St. Johns is 435-307 all time when playing at Madison Square Garden.

The Red Storm’s offense has been on a roll this season, averaging 79.3 PPG (23rd), 18.4 APG (4th), 44.9 FG% (132nd), 33.3 3PT% (202nd), and 38.3 RPG (52nd). St. Johns offense is led by junior guard Julian Champagnie who has had a terrific season. Champagnie is averaging 18.5 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and shooting 41% from the field. Another key part to the Red Storm’s offense is junior forward Aaron Wheeler who is averaging 9.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, shooting 50% from the field, and 40% from beyond the arc. Once this team gets going they are a lot of fun to watch.

The defensive side of the ball is where St. Johns runs into some trouble. This season they are allowing 74.3 PPG (300th), 42.1 FG% (126th), 36.5 3Pt% (323rd), while averaging 9.3 SPG (17th), and 5,7 BPG (12th). St. Johns will need to focus on slowing down UConn’s big three scorers as well as force them into turnovers. In their first matchup with UConn, the Red Storm forced 16 turnovers and while they didn’t win the game, they still forced the game to go to overtime and gave themselves a fighting chance. Expect turnovers to be a huge factor again in this one.

UConn has failed to cover the spread in five straight games when facing St. John's. (AP)

UCONN HUSKIES VS. ST. JOHN'S RED STORM BETTING CONCLUSION

Last season, St. Johns started 2-6 in conference play before defeating the 23rd ranked UConn Huskies. Following the win, the Red Storm went on a five game Big East winning streak and finished the season 8-3. While not exactly the same circumstances, could history be repeating itself? Only time has the answer to that question but while we wait, I will be locking in St. Johns +3.5.
