TEXAS LONGHORNS vs. PURDUE BOILERMAKERS PREDICTIONS

Texas picked up an 81-73 win over Virginia Tech, the ACC Tournament champion, in the first round as the Longhorns covered a 1.5-point number as the OVER connected. The victory and cover actually snapped an 0-6 ATS skid for the Longhorns. The OVER was the first after a 3-0 UNDER run for the Longhorns, too.

For Purdue, they had very little trouble with Yale from the Ivy League in a 14-3 matchup. The Boilermakers won 78-56, comfortably covering a 16.5-point number as the UNDER cashed. In fact, the 56 points allowed by Purdue was the lowest since yielding 48 points to Butler back on Dec. 18 in a neutral-floor matchup.

Purdue shot 43% (22-of-51) from the floor, and just 32% (7-of-32) from behind the arc, while managing 82% (27-of-33) from the charity stripe. Purdue also outrebounded smallish Yale by a 40-to-28 margin, as Jaden Ivey led the way with 22 points and three triples.

TEXAS LONGHORNS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 22-11
  • ATS: 13-20
  • O/U: 15-28

The Longhorns managed 81 points in their victory over Virginia Tech in the opening round, just the third time in the past 26 games going for 80 or more points. It's just not part of the DNA of Texas to score big points. It would rather slow it down, grind it out on defense and win ugly. Against Purdue, that actually might be its best strategy.

The Longhorns have been ice-cold against the number lately, going 1-6 ATS in the past seven games overall, with that lone cover in Round 1 against the Hokies. The Longhorns are also a dismal 1-10 ATS in the past 11 NCAA Tournament games, and 2-6 ATS in the past eight neutral-site games as an underdog.

In terms of the total, the OVER is 12-4 in the past 16 NCAA Tournament games after the win for Texas Friday. The OVER is also 4-1 in the past five tournament games as a 'dog, although the UNDER is 5-0 in the past five neutral-site games as an underdog.

PURDUE BOILERMAKERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 28-7
  • ATS: 14-19-2
  • O/U: 18-17

Purdue snapped an 0-6 ATS skid with its cover over Yale. The defensive effort was nice for the Boilermakers, holding the Bulldogs of Yale to just 37% (23-of-63), and 24% (4-of-17) from behind the arc.

Purdue is actually a dismal 1-8-2 ATS in the past 11 games overall, while going 1-6-2 ATS in the past nine against winning teams. They're also just 7-18-2 ATS in the past 27 games as a favorite, while going 0-5-2 ATS in the past seven following a straight-up win, too. Purdue is 1-4 ATS in the previous five following a cover.

As far as totals are concerned, the UNDER has cashed in six of the past seven for the Boilermakers, while going 6-1 in the past seven as a favorite, too. However, in the NCAA Tournament, the OVER has cashed in four of the past five, although that UNDER came in Round 1 against Yale.

Purdue is just 7-18-2 ATS in the previous 27 games when favored. (AP)

TEXAS LONGHORNS vs. PURDUE BOILERMAKERS BETTING CONCLUSION

The Longhorns have been a disappointment over the years in the NCAA Tournament, and it's likely Texas is going to change things around here. The truth of the matter is that Texas is just a boring team. It isn't terribly gifted offensively, nor is it trying to be. It will grind out games defensively, and try and win boring.

The Boilermakers aren't that much more exciting, but they have a tremendous one-two punch in Jaden Ivey and Zach Edey, and really, that's the difference here. Purdue isn't likely to go very much further than the Sweet Sixteen, but it will get their with a win over Texas. Just don't expect to see these teams running up and down their floor.
