Betting on the Auburn Tigers
Since Bruce Pearl took over in 2014, Auburn has set out to prove it’s more than a football school. They’re making a really strong case, and bettors have enjoyed it as much as anyone else.
Auburn Men’s Basketball History
The Tigers’ basketball history has never been anything to write home about. Before Bruce Pearl arrived, the team had only finished a season inside the top-25 five times.
The program’s most significant run of high-level basketball came in the mid-‘80s.
The Tigers made the NCAA Tournament in five straight seasons, and fans got to watch future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley inside Memorial Coliseum.
Barkley’s final season at Auburn ended in the first round of the tournament when they were upset by 12th-seeded Richmond by one point despite entering the game as a 5-seed.
After Barkley left for the NBA, the team rattled off four more NCAA Tournament appearances, including its first trip to the Elite 8.
Fast forward to 1999 when Auburn entered the tournament as a 1-seed for the first time. Coach Cliff Ellis and Forward Chris Porter led the team to a 29-4 record but ultimately fell short in the Sweet 16.
The Tigers brought in former Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl in 2014. Pearl took Auburn to the Final Four in 2019, his fifth season, where the team was bounced by Virginia, the eventual national champion.
Betting in Alabama
As it stands, sports betting is not legal in Alabama.
In 2021, the Senate passed a package that included establishing a state lottery, turning racetracks into casinos, and offering retail and mobile betting.
Unfortunately, it never saw the House floor for a vote before the legislative session ended.
Alabama’s sports betting infrastructure is scarce relative to most of the US. The state has just three tribal casinos and zero commercial casinos.
The Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the tribe who owns the casinos, does have a sportsbook partner through its Wind Creek Casino in Pennsylvania, though.
For fans of the revitalized Auburn basketball program, betting on the team may look a little like this if it’s legalized:
· Auburn -3.5
· Alabama +3.5
Here, Auburn is favored by 3.5 points in basketball’s version of the Iron Bowl. If you place a spread bet on Auburn, you need a Tigers victory of at least 4 points.
If Auburn wins by fewer than 4, or loses, the wager settles as a loss and Alabama covers the spread.
