2026 ACC Football Betting Preview: Winners, Losers, and the Bet You Need to Know
Updated on 8/21/26

The ACC has no shortage of storylines heading into 2026 — a marquee coaching hire under the microscope, a quarterback with legitimate Heisman buzz, and a sleeper team that could crash the College Football Playoff conversation. Here's the full breakdown.
Be sure to check out our Big Ten Preview as well as our SEC Preview.
The Winner: Georgia over The Conference Champion: Miami over SMU
Carson Beck is gone, but Miami's quarterback room isn't losing a step — Cam Ward's clear replacement, Darian Mensah, has the look of a Heisman-caliber talent this fall. Mensah gives Miami exactly what it needs to stay explosive offensively, and he won't be doing it alone: the addition of Cooper Barkate to the wide receiver room adds another dangerous weapon to an already loaded offense.
Miami's defense is a strong point of the team. The Hurricanes bring back a huge chunk of a unit that was one of the best in the entire country a year ago, and pair that with the top transfer class in the ACC, and you have a team built to win now rather than rebuild. There isn't a more complete roster in the conference.
SMU will make things interesting. The Mustangs return strong offensive talent and won't be an easy out for anyone on their schedule. But when it comes down to matching Miami's combination of quarterback play, defensive continuity, and roster talent, SMU simply doesn't have enough to keep pace. Miami cuts down the nets as ACC Champions.
The Underrated Team: Louisville
Tell me where we've heard this before: a former Ohio State quarterback buried on the depth chart transfers to an ACC school, walks into a manageable schedule, and turns into one of the best stories in college football. If Kyle McCord's run at Syracuse is ringing a bell, Louisville might be setting up the sequel.
The numbers back up the sleeper case. Louisville's 2026 schedule ranks just 58th in difficulty nationally, they bring in the second-best transfer class in the conference, and they return a solid base of production from last season. That's the exact recipe for a team that outkicks its preseason coverage — and it's not out of the question that Louisville finds itself squarely in the College Football Playoff conversation come November.
The Overrated Team: Virginia Tech
Outside of Lane Kiffin's move to LSU, no coaching hire is generating more offseason buzz than Franklin's arrival at Virginia Tech — and the expectation in a lot of corners is an immediate turnaround in year one. That expectation doesn't line up with the roster he's inheriting.
This Virginia Tech team ranked just 15th in overall PFF rating in the ACC a year ago, and 14 starters return from that same underwhelming group. A new coach and a new voice can only do so much when the on-field talent hasn't materially changed. Realistically, this looks like a team on track for at least six losses, with a real chance it doesn't even reach bowl eligibility in year one. The hype is outpacing the roster.
Best Bet: Louisville to Make the College Football Playoff — 20% OR (+460)
The Louisville case above does most of the heavy lifting here. A Week 1 matchup with Ole Miss looks winnable and would immediately put Louisville's playoff hopes on solid footing. From there, the schedule sets up beautifully — the Cardinals only face one more ranked opponent the rest of the way in SMU, and they avoid Miami entirely unless the two meet in the ACC Championship Game.
Weak schedule, strong transfer class, a quarterback with something to prove, and a playoff format that rewards conference contenders — it all points to Louisville playing meaningful football deep into January. At +460, this is a best bet with real upside.
Miami looks like the class of the ACC, but between Louisville's sneaky playoff path and Virginia Tech's shaky foundation under a big-name hire, the conference has plenty of intrigue beyond the top of the standings.
