On October 8th, 2025 the NCAA Divison I Administrative committee adopted a proposal that would allow college athletes to place bets on professional sports like the NFL or NBA. The NCAA made it explicitly clear that this is not an endorsement of sports betting, especially for student athletes.
This does not meant that the provision automatically takes action. Both the Division II and III executive committees will need to approve the provision in order for it to take place. If Division II and III executives pass the motion, it is slated to take effect on November 1st. Provisions against athletes betting on collegiate sports and sharing information about college competitions with other bettors remain in place.
Dr. Deena Cassiero, NCAA chief medical officer claims: "Abstinence-only approaches to social challenges for college-aged individuals are often not as successful as approaches that focus on education about risks and open dialogue, The NCAA will continue to collaborate with schools to help them provide student-athletes with meaningful education and other resources for student-athletes who choose to participate in betting on professional sports. This harm reduction approach gives schools an opportunity to help student-athletes make educated decisions, prevent risky behavior and seek support without fear of impacting their eligibility."
It is cited that this move will allow the NCAA to focus on the integrity of college games while encouraging healthy habits for student-athletes who choose to wager on professional sports.
