The Boilermakers might be talented enough on offense to come out and win this game outright. Unfortunately for them, their play calling, and strategy won’t hold up. Purdue blew away UCONN – barely a real team at this point – but don’t let the score fool you in how cautious they can be with the ball. The plan will be to hold on to the football with long methodical drives, asking their QB Jack Plummer to make smart decisions.

That’s just not going to be enough, especially on the road in South Bend. At some point Purdue is going to have to take a shot down field or ask their offense to make plays they haven’t had to make so far. Yes, the season is still early, but Notre Dame has a lethal pass rush, making any comeback even closer to impossible.

Jack Coan has been the fuel behind the Irish’s early season success, adding stability to a team that’s been up and down in games. We’ve seen two games so far where the Irish rush defense was gashed, despite causing fits in the pass game. Even ND’s rushing attack has been underwhelming at times, compared to the consistency from Coan. If Purdue could run the ball more effectively this might be a closer game.

It may take time, but this is Notre Dame’s game to lose. The Irish catch a break hosting a 2-0 Purdue team with the line dropping below double-digits. Purdue will have some chances to score, probably earlier on based on how inconsistent Notre Dame has been on defense. The issue will be when ND’s offense wakes up and Purdue must keep up.
