WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS vs. VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES BETTING PREDICTION

The Mountaineers lost a heartbreaker in the regular-season opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 1, falling 38-31. Pitt had a pick-six to flip things in its favor, although West Virginia hung on for the cover with seven and a hook. It lost a 55-42 battle in overtime to Kansas, slipping to 0-2 SU, but the offense quickly righted the ship last week against Towson State of the FCS last week, winning 65-7 while covering a 41-point number as the OVER cashed for the third straight outing.

The Hokies enter with a better record at 2-1 SU, but the offense has really struggled. Virginia Tech lost its opener at Old Dominion by a 20-17 score, while topping a bad BC team in the home opener by a 28-10 score. It dropped Wofford of the FCS last week by a 27-7 count, so it is 1-2 ATS while cashing the UNDER in all three outings to date.

These teams used to face down in the Big East Conference back in the day, but each went their separate ways in the early 2000's. They renewed acquaintances in Landover, Md. in a neutral-site game, with Virginia Tech winning 31-24, while West Virginia won in Morgantown last season by a 27-21 win on Sept. 18, 2021. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 29-23-1.

Score Prediction: West Virginia 26, Virginia Tech 23

WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Mountaineers QB J.T. Daniels has completed 64.4% of his passes for 743 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions through three games, while running for another score. RB C.J. Donaldson has registered 274 rushing yards and six scores with an average of 9.4 yards per carry, while WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton has racked up 24 receptions for 296 yards and four scores. The Mountaineers have a very balanced attack, but most of those big performances came against Kansas and Towson State of the FCS in home games in West Virginia, not ACC talent.

The Mountaineers have registered a 5-1 ATS in the past six games in the month of September, including 2-1 ATS this season so far. They're also 4-1 ATS in the past five non-conference games, although the Mountaineers have covered just three of the past 10 games on the road, while going 1-4 ATS in the past five against winning teams.

For totals, the OVER has hit in four of the past five games overall, while going 5-2 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. However, the UNDER has hit at a 5-2-1 clip in the past eight against ACC teams.

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES BETTING ANALYSIS

For Virginia Tech, the Hokies have really struggled offensively. Marshall transfer QB Grant Wells has struggled with turnovers, as he has been picked off four times. He has completed 64.9% of his passes for 651 yards and four touchdowns, while running for another score.

The Hokies failed to cover last week, and that's usually a good thing next time out. Virginia Tech is 4-0 ATS in the past four games following a non-cover, but that's the only positive trend. Virginia Tech is 4-10 ATS in the past 14 games overall dating back to last season, while going 2-6 ATS in the past eight home games and 0-6 ATS in the past six non-conference tilts. The Hokies are also just 1-11 ATS in the past 12 following a straight-up win.

In terms of the totals, it's all about the UNDER lately for Virginia Tech. The UNDER has hit in four out of the past five games overall, while going 9-4 in the past 13 home games while cashing in five of the past seven non-conference outings. The UNDER is 3-0-1 in the past four against the Big 12, while going 7-0 in the past seven games in the month of September.
