VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES vs. NC STATE WOLFPACK BETTING PREDICTION

The Hokies of Virginia Tech head for Raleigh after a bye week. The Hokies haven't won since Sept. 17, a 27-7 win over Wofford of the FCS, and it's only win against an FBS team came Sept. 10 in the conference opener at home against Boston College. Virginia Tech has really struggled lately, losing four in a row, with three of the setbacks coming by 16 or more points. The closest pass came last time out, a 20-14 loss to Miami at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, earning the first cover since that B.C. win in early September.

The Wolfpack are also coming off a loss, getting dropped 24-9 at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse on Oct. 15. The team has had 11 days to stew about the loss, but, more importantly, it has had time to get QB Jack Chambers and/or QB MJ Morris ready. QB Devin Leary, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, went down in the Florida State game with a torn pectoral injury which required season-ending surgery. Since, the offense has been a bit disjointed.

Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 28-18-4, which is an inordinate amount of times for just 50 all-time meetings. Of course, we don't get ties any longer. The Hokies have won and covered each of the past five meetings, with the last win in the series coming Sept. 26, 2020 in Blacksburg by a 45-24 score. These teams haven't met in Raleigh since Oct. 2, 2010, a 41-30 victory by the Hokies.

VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES BETTING ANALYSIS

The Hokies have really struggled on the offensive side of the ball, posting just 323.4 total yards per game to rank 115th, while registering just 108.9 rushing yards per contest (108th). The Hokies also have just 19.1 PPG to rank 115th. If only they had recruited a quarterback like Tennessee's Hendon Hooker to run the offense. Ooh, that has to sting Hokie Nation, as the 2022 Heisman Trophy candidate for the Vols was a two-year starter in Blacksburg, but he lost his job to QB Braxton Burmeister, who, subsequently, is now at San Diego State. Ahh, the transfer portal.

Enter QB Grant Wells, who came over from Marshall to run the ship. So far, he has run aground, completing just 59.2% of his pass attempts for 1,439 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions while running for 148 yards and three scores. There are bright spots for the Hokies on offense, however, as RB Keshawn King is averaging 5.9 yards per rushing attempt, leading the team with 259 yards and two scores. On the receiving end, Bumpass, Va. native (no, that's really a place!) WR Kaleb Smith has 428 yards on 28 receptions with two scores, good for 15.3 yards per reception.

Virginia Tech is 1-4 ATS in the past five games overall, while going 1-4 ATS in the past five appearances on Thursday, too. The Hokies are also 1-5 ATS in the past six on the road, but 5-0 ATS in the past five against NC State.

For totals, it's all about the UNDER for the Hokies, going 6-1 in the past seven games overall, and 4-1 in the past five ACC games. The UNDER is also 6-2 in the past eight at home, while going 22-6 in the past 28 appearances on a Thursday night.

NC STATE WOLFPACK BETTING ANALYSIS

The Wolfpack have really been missing Leary, as Chambers has completed just 54.5% of his pass attempts for 208 yards, one touchdown and no picks in parts of four games. The run game has struggled this season, but RB Demie Sumo-Karngbaye has managed 299 yards and three scores on 5.8 yards per rushing attempt. WR Thayer Thomas is the best player on offense, going for 27 grabs, 319 yards and two scores.

NC State has failed to cover the past four games, and it is 0-4 ATS in the past four ACC games, too. However, the Wolfpack have covered 12 of the past 17 games at Carter-Finley Stadium, while going 5-2 ATS in the past seven Thursday appearances.

For totals, the OVER is 7-3 in the past 10 games in the Triangle, but that's with a majority of the starts coming under a Leary-led offense. The UNDER is 4-1 in the past five following a bye week, and 17-2-1 in the past 20 games on a Thursday. This should be a low-scoring defensive slog.
